Server comparison...

Unread post by V'rass »

Some people have asked me about the other server I am temporarily playing on and how it compares to BG. I have seen several others from BG on the server occasionally as well. I normally don't talk about servers but i suppose a comparison could not hurt for those who are truly curious.

The server is based on Sigil and the planes. Instead of fae'rune or any other prime world you travel across the planes and do most of your rp in sigil itself. The city itself is huge... 3-4 times larger then BG with 6-7 large areas. Its also very confusing for first time players. Its difficult to navigate as well as the city is A-symmetrical and not laid out in any logical fashion.

Most of the rp goes on in an area aptly named, The great bazaar. They don't have an auction system like BG but rather use a very advanced system of player run merchants. There are often several such player merchants set up there with dozens of chests and sometimes thousands of items for sale. Loot is somewhat more generous then BG but it also scales to ones lv so low lv characters will find low end stuff most of the time, often merely scrolls... which is good if you are a wizard but not that great otherwise.

It is much easier to solo then BG but grouping gives much greater benefits. Lving is much faster then BG but due to the difficulty of finding groups and the much lower amount of grinding going on this is not that great of an advantage as it may seem. Also while the low and mid lv areas can be soloed the high lv areas require a group and as said groups are very hard to find as they have no scry window and only two or three people grind at any one time.

They have much fewer dms then BG and thus much fewer events. Most people spend all their time on rp and almost none on pvm or pvp. They do have the custom item appearance changer which is the feature i am there for primarily. They use the standard crafting system using gems, essences, and powers to enchant stuff. Enchanters on that server can make some obscene amounts of money enchanting stuff for people.

Overall i find BG to be the better server. Its bigger, has more people, and more stuff happening at any one time. Its also more kind to new players. Sigil is not a bad server but BG is, for me at least... the better server. Hopefully this is sufficient for those who were curious. Soon as i figure out how to upload my custom armor file i shall be back permanently. Wish me luck. ;)

Thanks for the comparison, V'rass. The folks over at Sigil have helped us out a lot in the past, and have some really cool people on staff.

In fact, BG works closely with many other servers, and shares players with many more. NWN2 is a community, and the more server options available to the players in that community the better!

I was looking at other servers. When i read on Sigil's forum you can reach level 30 in less than a week, I was like... "uh, not for me"

There was an underdark one that seemed to come and go in a month. WOnder what happened there.

Realm of Darkness... I tried it out during our unfortunate daily attacks that were constantly taking the server down and it was pretty cool. People grouped up constantly as the dungeons had a script where each person in the party when you entered gained loot from each chest. In addition the chests/dungeon would reset rather quickly after a group exited the dungeon for the next group to be able to go in. However, I found after a few logins I was getting attempts from other players at ERP so found a different server for when ours was down. I believe they are planning to reopen that server after the new year, but haven't paid enough attention to know for sure.

It seemed nice, but Gracklstugh and Menzoberranzan were a bit too alike ordinary villages in their layout for me at that time.

A few additional things as well, some of which might be good for bringing into BG. Im not sure how the metal system works in BG but so far I have seen 4 types: Adamantine, cold iron, alchemical silver, and darksteel. The other server has about a dozen more types each with their own special benefits. I cant remember all of them but here are a few.

Solanian Truesteel: This metal comes from Celestia and counts as holy and good aligned. It does extra damage to evil beings and overcomes their DR. They have similar types of metal that do the same for the other alignments.

Abyssal Bloodiron: This metal comes from the abyss and does an extra 4d6 damage when a critical hit is scored.

Byshek: Mainly for making blunt weapons, it adds an extra d6 bludgeoning damage bonus and is I am told really good for undead and constructs.

Baatorian green-steel: Not sure exactly what it does?

These are just a few...

I'd be really interested in several kinds of metals being implemented in BG, just because variety is always good.

There's also Mithral, Zalantar (wood) and Ironwood. The latter two are sometimes regarded as being superior to iron.

There are few ideas implemented in Sigil that I wish BGTSCC would shamelessly copy.

One of them is the combo containers + chest display system that makes it so much easier for player merchants to sell their stuff and you can see on Sigil PCs selling wares on the bazaar everyday despite their small playerbase.

Another thing is the encounter difficulty system that scales with both party size and a setting that can be accessed through a tool in the inventory. A lot of times on BG, when you're in party of 6 you simply aren't challenged by anything in your level range and if you decide to take on a more difficult dungeon then you won't be rewarded for it, in fact, if you're too many levels below the monster you've slained your XP is greatly diminished (I won't ever understand the intention behind it).

None... there have been maybe 2 events and I missed both of them though given where they were held it would have been foolish for me to attempt them.
