i did some fencing as well, my coach was our olympic silver medalist for canada. he would laugh at my antics sometimes, since when i couldn't score an easy point i would slap the opponents lead knee on the side when the opportunity presented itself.

you don't get points for it, but it smarts

(also, we only had a small runway for footwork, would have loved to be able to circle my opponent.)

The small runway and no-point hits are exclusive to Olympic Fencing. Check out HEMA! In HEMA, for a move to be worth a point all you need to do is make the hit land with the edge instead of the flat, make sure it doesn't just glance off from weird angles AND most importantly, avoid getting hit afterwards.

You are also allowed circle your opponent and even close in to wrestle them to the ground in some tournaments (usually seen in longsword vs longsword, or longsword vs spear).

Both can be equally fun.
