A dark hooded and armored man makes his way to the beaches of Ulgoth's Shore. He eventually takes a shallow bowl from his satchel and fills it with water from an incoming crash of wave.

The water thief makes his way through the unpaved paths of the settlement, til dirt turns to grass, and the level ground turns to a sharp incline. The going is slow - he seems intent to carry the water to some destination.

Eventually, he reaches the end of his unmarked path, a high cliff overlooking the waters. Not far off a keening whistle is heard, a nearby shrine of the Wind Walker with its stone effigy catching the wind to create noise. The light of day bleeding away as the sky's hues turn orange, red, and purple as dusk arrives.

For any curious that happened to mark his passage so far, would bear witness to further odd behavior. The bowl is laid down carefully, near it, a silver knife, an unfurled scroll that is blank in appearance, and a dark, heavy blindfold. He retrieves a pouch of unseen contents which he attaches to his belt.

He waits a time longer, til even the multi-colored hues of days end have given way to a starlit night. Selune is waxed full in the sky above.

He looks up and mutters some prayer to himself, to Selune, or to the wind - the wind surely takes it if there are no ears but his to hear it.

He takes up the bowl, and drinks. He nearly chokes on it, carefully putting the bowl back down and covering his mouth with his hand til the urge subsides, and he's swallowed the brine.

Next, he picks up the thick black cloth, he ties this over his eyes.

Then, he takes up the knife, using the bottom portion of his hand to hold the parchment in place, he pricks the tip of his unprotected finger. The droplet created is bright red and he holds his finger thusly, blindly gauging when some of it has ran down the tip of the blade. He presses this makeshift quill to the parchment, drawing it across in a line.

The night itself seems to still. For what to him seems a dreadful, silent age he remains seated there, waiting.

But little time passes and he is simply gone.

As Selune's soft silvery light begins to give way to the first coloration of the sky which would herald Lathander's dawn, there is a bright flash of light on the hilltop where the water thief had started his ritual.

Now two forms are there upon the wind strewn grass, a few short feet away from where he had originally disappeared. The man is clutching tightly to the form of a woman who does not stir. The woman is listless in his embrace and shows no outward signs of life. Her dark hair flowing in the breeze.

The pair stay there even as the last vestiges of night have fully turned to dawn.

*The druid Teris who lives at the Last Anchor can be found carrying a few baskets of tomatoes, freshly picked from his garden, and generously sharing them with the townsfolk of Ulgoth's Beard. If anyone attempted to pay him for one, he would try to refuse, stating that he just grew a lot of extra tomatoes and was sharing to be nice to people, for free.*

Early in the afternoon the Last Anchor proprietor Derik Ranloss can be seen standing outside one side of the building, looking it and some of the ground over, then climbing up on a ladder to review the roof and second story from the outside. It wasn't clear what he was doing, but he was clearly making some sort of measurement and recording the results.

Late one evening, a robed male wearing a red cloak and hood could be seen, with the help of a Ghaele, slowly dragging a tall statue past the lighthouse. The robed male would stop to snap his fingers then, and the Ghaele would vanish into the weave, leaving the male to continue his laborious dragging of the statue down towards the pier. After much scraping and grunting, the statue, seemingly of a pirate, would be neatly deposited to stand at the end of the pier, it's gaze locked forever on the churning waves of the sea.

The robed male would step back to admire his work then, but only for a moment, before turning to stride past Barnacle Bob and towards the ferryman... a single word, in elven, escaping from his hood as he passed.

Rumor has it that a half-elven man washed up onto shore at Ulgoth's Beard, his sea-soaked self unequipped except for what was tied to his person by rope —further rumored to be a bookseller's valise—and some may speculate that such an object acted as a buoy by which he was deposited there by the sea, so it seems, instead of drowning.

No ships were seen passing by in the time before his discovery, lying semi-conscious and half-bewildered in the wet sand, waves lapping against his person....

After some time, Smythe is taken into care by others and swiftly brought to the Bearded Mermaid—where like any other desperate soul who has succumbed to suffering from upon or within the seas—and served savory soup and spiced spirits...from within a bottle...surely saving this seafarer from submitting to a certain "silence."

The half-Elven Man, this Jon Smythe, almost like a half-wit, did what he was told through motion of the offer of the meal and the libation—consciousness, full or even partial, remained a question in the mind of the staff that waited on him. Many offered a throated praise to the Captain of the Waves...others, a whisper to the Bitch Queen, that would ward away and lingering curse that may still sit within this soaked sailor's skin.

So Smythe sat there...staring in to the fire, the flames lighting his face and what would appear, over the hours that would turn into days, to alight his awareness, slowly his features beginning to adjust as it would seem emotions flowed on top of this ever growing wave of a conscious mind.

Yes, time lingered on, while patrons came and went, some sneering at the rumor-by-description castaway, while others may have showed pity for what undoubtedly seemed a troubled half-Elven Man.

At some point, it was not only the lick of flames reflected in his green eyes that shined, but something much more...present. Swiftly and out of shock, Smythe turned to the nearest barmaid as she passed him on way through the establishment, his hand reaching out to catch her sleeve, gently but holding fast the fabric, to look her in the eye a mixed stare of amazement and...anxiety, as he seemed to focus upon the interior of the Bearded Mermaid with recognition.

Late one evening, a row-boat travelling from the direction of the Sahuagin island arrives to thunk loudly against the pier. A slender looking male wearing a black-cloak steps off the boat, and proceeds to drag a large fishing net** behind him up the pier, and towards Barnacle Bill.

The slender looking male, an elf, by all appearances, and seeming nothing at all like a sea-faring type, dumps the net at Bills feet rather unceremoniously as he tries to catch his breath. A long moment would seem to pass as the elf stared down blankly at the net, then up at Bill, and up and down a few times again. When he finally speaks, the elf does so in a bland tone...

"... Uhh, did you, or any of your ilk, lose these? And, if not... are they worth anything?" he asked rather obliviously.

Hidden: show
((Appraise skill 2, Rolled a 3  ))
While awaiting the mans response, the elf would scratch the side of his hooded head, then tap his foot and glance back towards the boats.

Barnacle Bill is galvanized into motion he loads a pipe walking round the net, kicking it twice for effect, looking back at the elf as if to reassure himself, "You don't know much do you. Look these are snail nets. What most you want is someone who gathers snails. But here you are and here is your old and worn nets. " Lights his pipe, badly. "Tell you what, and call me foolish, but I will make an offer for the lot, take it or leave it." *coughs and splutters removing the pipe."

The elf blinked a few times at the offer... then made a 'give me' motion with an open hand.

"I'll take it... I wouldn't know where to find a... uh, snail catcher? ... If I tried. Plus, I don't want to have to carry these things around. I almost tripped on them four times getting them here..."

If he's is getting bilked by Bill, the elf doesn't seem to let on, as he sounds rather eager to be rid of them.

Bill promises to pay the elf and gathers in the nets to store them for now.

As it was, the liveliness of the Bearded Mermaid—sea shanties performed, ruffians behind flagons drunk deep and dry, the serving, the floor cleaning, the...vigor—put color back into the flesh of the Half-Elven Jon Smythe and clarity in the perception of vision. The fog of the recent rescue from sea—self-rescue as it as well may be one day known—did lift, but not until day after day after day of sitting alone in front of the hearth.

Less and less catatonic, what was spoken by others, the rumors of the inebriated passed among themselves, filtered in the air...and it would be in this state of mind that Smythe heard many a truth and many a falsehood unknown, about that which touched, afflicted, occupied or blessed this bit of the Sword Coast.

Smythe became a half-Man, informed. Oriented in current local lore, now, though clearly uncertain about his own person, to do much in body.

Until it was time, that mind propelled body to stretch, to rise, to stomp feet for assured ability. And though the hour was late—Smythe not knowing as much, with the interior of the Inn always the same in its dark and eternal way, he took some first steps outward toward....

Image

Old, awoken memory led Smythe to the docks, where travel was consistently offered and for what appeared to be Smythe's desire to acquire. But once there, surrounded by the lapping waves and after peering outward to the sea, Jon Smythe paused, bookseller's valise clutched to his chest, his life preserver in recent times, and pondered, stalled and stuttered in his action.

"Nevermind." He responded to Nelvin. Smythe seemed unwilling to put himself upon water, again, so soon after....

Another old memory sparked, and the Half-Elven Jon Smythe now turned his back to the sea and front to land, east, and marched. Still clutching the bookseller's valise against his chest, he walked slowly and hesitantly as any newly shored sailor might when finding their land legs, following the beach as long as he could until it started to develop into a tree-lined hillside.

Smythe sighed heavily as he continued past the wooden, guarded fence, eastward. His face shown recognition of the march he was about to make, though equally, such a sigh could be attributed to the anticipation of his destination.

Now that the drama and business of the war with Dragonspear forces has more or less concluded, Derik Ranloss can be seen traveling about the Coast a bit acquiring various reagents and components.

After a few weeks of this, these components are supplied to a friend and Mage, Oth, who uses them to cast some sort of spell on the Last Anchor.

When asked, Derik replies it is for "security concerns"

Last night, close to dawn. Two figures could be seen at the top of the cliff above the village.
Standing close and holding each other, engulfed by a golden hue against the darkness of the night.
Speaking in soft and quiet voices they stood in each other arms, until the the sun kissed their face with dawns first rays.
At which point they teleported in a flash of blue light.

In the last few mornings, a grim one-eyed tiefling was frequent at Ulgoth's Beard town, mostly spending his time at the beach and Bearded Mermaid Inn. He was asking the locals about the town, especially if there is any buildings for sale.

The last morning, a solid-sized parchment was found pinned to the local warehouse's door.

We are looking for the owner of this warehouse.

Leave a missive at Bearded Mermaid for Jalib if you possess any information about them — or you are them.

An odd sight greeted the inhabitants and visitors of Ulgoth's Beard today...

A pair of orcs tried to kidnap the mage known as Oth after attempting to convince him to get in a bag.

It was unsuccessful as after their failed convincing, they grabbed him and ran, and were both promptly shot down by a couple of others that were there.

The bodies were dragged off to a ditch some ways out of town.
