Are Magical Wardrobe Transformations Legal by Server Rules

Unread post by PJtheFey »

Are magical changes in clothing legal in game, and if so what kind of cosmetic magical effects are we allowed to RP on the grounds of "Hey I've got magic?"

I've noticed a few magic users completely swap out a set of gear in public and then emote something like it vanishes and the new items appear like some sort of Sailor Moon transformation, and I'm just kinda wondering if this is legal considering the "play what's on your sheet" rule on this server. As far as I know there's no spell in the game that does this, and IC I'm left wondering how to react.

Usually there's no mechanical benefit to this, although I have seen one spell caster buff everything in robes (thus avoiding spell failure) then declare that a suit of armor flickers into existence around the caster.

This might be better suited to be asked in "questions for dm's"

I believe some time in the past dm's have ruled minute cantrips are ok to rp so long as there is no mechanical advantage. Where armor is related after casting in robes I would say it depends if the buffs were to adventure with a group or in advance of a pvp situation.

In my opinion, it's ok to RP that he is taking of the armor, cast spells, and put on the armor again, as long you are not in a hurry.

But having 100000 GP and transfering it between character is fine?

The rule, if I can remember is if it hinders not other or give you super power or advantages over others in RP situation, it is fine.

Everyone can RP having a magical quill if they like.

Everyone can have a bag of holding, sold for 1.99$ at Walled-Mart to carry 1000 swords, shields armor...

You get my meaning?

Yes, because mulling has been ruled upon and is not against the server rules...

As I said, the armor thing might cross a line, but definitely wouldn't be ok if going in to a pvp or similar situation. It's one thing to rp a cantrip that causes rain to fall around you keeping you dry, quite another to magically change from robes to armor giving an advantage over an opponent.

This is why it belongs in the DM section, so that you can get an official ruling.

This is OK if they are wizards and not fighting in pvp although I'd frown upon them doing it in pve as well. Usually this would be an arcane caster who doesn't have stillspell yet and they want to buff.

The official rulings have been that cantrips that don't affect anything mechanically are allowed and any other spell not found in game is allowed so long as a DM oks it. This has led to elves cursing people and (*Removed by DM Cradh).

There is a PnP spell for it and a basic magical enchantment "Called" although this enchantment does not work for wardrobe changes only armor. However you can have a "Glamered" set of robes for the low price of 2,700.

Its a basic magic effect in all three cases, Very unlikely to shock anyone when used (unless magic is new to your character). I would not support this use in PvP situations, But in a normal rp scenario why not? It after all has no harmful effect on you and can save a player an arbitrary time waster.

Lastly i support anything that will get players to take their armor of every once in a while. It is in no way realistic to wear full plate 24 hours a day, You would be pushing it for eight.

Unless we add a timer for equipping armor. I don't see any harm in this. Everyone changes clothes in an instant - this is a creative way of explaining it.

I must admit that I cringe inwardly when I see someone emoting magically swapping in and out of clothes, but it's one of the limitations of playing a video game where such thing just happen instantly and I recognize that it might be adding to the fun of their playstyle, so I just go along with it without commenting. It's not like it's the end of the world, and if they're having fun with it, then good for them.

As I recall, there's a section in the Player's Handbook where it addresses how long it takes to swap in and out of armour. I found a very pertinent link here, with a table showing times to get in and out of various kinds of armour: http://www.realmshelps.net/stores/armor.shtml

I admit that I do the insta-change if I'm alone (because, let's face it, it's just a video game). If not, I RP going off to a side, and then wait a while before I return - or even better, I ask for help if I have a full plate armour.

For me, it adds to the immersion and my fun. So that's why I do it.

There is already a timer IG, that prevents a PC from changing armor during and/or a number of seconds after combat.

When you can carry 2000 pounds of stuff without slowing down, the 50 pounds of armor become fairly irrelevant.

How many people play eight hours straight? Do you RP every meal your character takes? Does anyone RP "using the restroom"? If someone wants to spend their time when they are actually logged on as the time their characters spend dressed for battle and looking for an adventure instead of playing house, that is their choice and it is most certainly not something to be looked down upon.
