First Name: Verro

Appearance and personality: A wiry wood elf with strong, lean muscles. His manner of dress is unorthodox, often piecing together odd bits of fashion from different regions he has visited, making his appearance a scrap-book of where he has been.
His gait shows a distinct lack of confidence in himself. He often hunches, giving off the impression that he is shorter than he actually is.
Quick to stamer under stress or social situations he is not prepared for, Verro gives off the impression that he is inadequate of performing basic duties. Although he is a decent warrior and a dedicated bodyguard, he often severely underestimates his own abilities.

Background: Never a brave man, Verro Kalis grew up in the eastern land of Murghôm. His parents were enforcers of the Cult of the Dragon, tasked with raiding caravans in the region. Living in the shadows, and surviving off the suffering of others did not lead Verro to have a happy childhood.
His gentle nature was the cause of great strife with his family. His resistance to participate in Cult ordered raids lead to a strain on the relationship with his family. While his father insisted Verro's reluctance to fully pledge himself to the Cult of the Dragon was because of cowardice, the young elf insisted that the attacks were foolish and would draw unwanted attention. In truth, his father had the right of it. Eventually, Verro fled Murghôm and abandoned the Cult of the Dragon. After a poorly thought-out journey, Verro found himself in the strange lands of Rashemen, hungry and penniless.
Sleeping under a pile of hay, Verro overheard a private meeting between a young merchant and a hooded figure talking about missing caravans and the Cult of the Dragon. For his first bold move in his life, Verro crawled out from the pile of hay, and made himself be known to the two men who wore harp-shaped pins. He offered information about the cult in exchange for food and board. The hooded figure was skeptical and argued in favor of executing the eavesdropper. Fortunately for Verro, the young merchant, Justin Goodheart, saw the opportunity that the situation presented and convinced his companion to spare the copper elf.
Justin Goodheart and Verro eventually became fast friends, and the merchant offered the elf a job as a guard for his caravan. Although the pay was modest, as the caravan struggled to turn a profit, the work was honest and provided Verro with peace of mind. For the most part, guarding the caravan was dull and uneventful. Verro preferred life this way.
Despite his contentment with his job, and his apparent clean break from his old life, Verro still struggled to find his own way. No longer believing in the dark gods of his parents, Verro felt lost for some time. One night after a long arduous day of travel, the caravan stopped to water their horses near a shrine of Eldath. A feeling of overwhelming peace came over Verro, and he decided to become a follower of the Mother Guardian of Groves. He could not explain why he felt such a sudden commitment to Eldath, just that the peace he felt was palpable and something to be revered.
Over the course of several years, Justin's caravan went from a struggling endeavor to a flourishing business. Verro was constantly by Justin's side and watched the young man marry, have children and grow old. Traveling with the Goodheart caravan route, Verro traveled across Faerun. He saw the enormous din of Athkatla, the Jewel of the North, the Sea of Fallen Stars, the lodges of Rashemen, and eventually to the dangerous land of Thay.
His time in Thay was the least pleasant. Justin insisted that the business must trade in Thay for the time being, but the country put Verro at a constant state of unease. Sheepishly avoiding red wizards and the public at all costs, Verro spent most of his time a recluse when the Goodhearts did not have tasks for him. He hated this land. It reminded him far too much of Murghôm, and the memories of what his parents had done put him in a constant state of anxiety.
Although Justin was Verro's closest friend, the elf knew that there was more to the Goodheart business than the merchant was willing to share. Bursting through the door of their room in Thay late one night, Justin screamed at Verro that they needed to leave immediately. The merchant family, a few assistants and Verro abandoned a sizeable fortune in wares and immediate fled the Land of the Red Wizards. Verro never got a straight answer to why they fled Thay so quickly. When pressed, Justin only murmured "So much work undone... so much lost." The wood elf never could shake the feeling that the merchant was not talking about the lost wares.
Pressing hard towards the north, the merchant group did not stop until they were safely in the protection of an old friend at the Rashemen Ice Bear Lodge. The tribal leaders of the lodge honored the Goodheart family's return with a feast. Justin made an announcement at the feast to declare his retirement and that he was handing over the reigns of Goodheart Mercantile to his daughter, Kana. Much to Justin's chagrin, Kana turned down the business in front of everyone, citing health concerns.
Soon after the feast, Justin and his wife decided they needed to get as far away from Thay as possible, and fled west to the small town of Ulgoth's Beard. Justin asked for Verro's service for one last trip. Verro accepted, and refused the now penniless merchant's offer to pay him.
The trip was fortunately uneventful, and upon arriving at Ulgoth's Beard, Justin asked Verro for one final favor. He handed Verro a small, meticulously polished oak box.
"Try to keep tabs on my daughter from time to time, and should she ever fall into trouble, use this."
Inside the box was the silver, harp-shaped pin Justin had worn during their first meeting.
Goals: Verro struggles to find his own way, and since the closure of Goodheart Mercantile, mostly wanders the coast aimlessly. His only real directive he has at the moment is to occasionally check in on Kana Goodheart. Kana often will provide a small allowance to handle certain odd jobs and to occasionally protect a person of interest.
Possible Plot-Hook Ideas and Misc Facts: The actions of Verro's parents have given him a clear understanding of how evil the Cult of the Dragon is, and he will likely take action against the Cult's affairs in the region. Likewise, it is perfectly plausible that the Cult of the Dragon would send an assassin after the ex-cultist.
Additionally, Verro's association with Justin Goodheart likely has given him numerous other enemies that Verro is unaware of.
