I've returned, but everything's changed!

I don't even know where to start. I tried the server out while Bioware was still operational, though had a hard time finding people to interact with and couldn't decide on a class. (( Plus I was generally unfamiliar with the lore of just about everything, still am for the most part. )) Returned several times since then, but never long enough to get into my character or the game. Eventually I decided to go with a sort of summoner/conjurer type of character as if fit my sit-back-and-do-nothing play style. However, after returning I've noticed new changes to conjuration and summoned creatures/minions in general.
The summon creature spell now gives me an option to choose a different type of creature to summon. First off, bravo. I've always wanted this sort of control while playing this game. That being said, I don't fully understand the changes that would really impact my character and how I play as they were brought in after my gfx card went belly up. Honestly speaking, I'm trying to decide if starting a new character is the best thing for me given the many new spells and changes I've noticed.
I have so many questions that I don't know what to ask first! What role does character alignment play in the spells I use/choose/learn? What spell(s) should I not learn or use, or is it if it's available, I can use it and not be Killed On Sight?
I'm just so lost!
Here is my build in case anyone is curious.
