Open Lock optimized

Unread post by freekender »

I'm planning a pure rogueish build but, taking into account I don't know which are the max DCs of the locked chests on the server... Is it better to max the Open Lock skill with 33 ranks? Or is enough with a lower rank? Or maybe it is easier to know the max DCs one can face...

Thanks in advance!

There are very few chests with OL DC above 40 on the server, but they do exist, here and there. I would say if you get a modified score of 20 you can always carry around Lockpicks +10 for the rare occasion they are needed. So, for instance if you're making a Halfling and have 32 DEX at the very end you have +11... If you wear any open lock gear you can take that in to account, but if you want to reach 20 just on base + stat bonus you can have OL at 9 and carry around a few lockpicks +1, 3, 6 and 10 to use as needed.

Note that there is VERY little middle ground (that I can think of). The only chests off the top of my head that you need more than a modified 30 are the ones in the pirate caves under the lighthouse in Ulgoth's Beard so generally either put in 1 point or around 10 - 15.

Now from an RP perspective, it's up to you, but if you want to RP as a 'master lock breaker' you should probably put in more, than you're able to pick locks even when unable to 'take 20' and if ever in a roguish style DM event you'll be able to handle any really tough locks they throw at you. Since you asked for the 'Optimized' score I would say ~ 10 - 15 depending on your DEX and your strength score (because carrying around a whole bunch of lockpicks will get heavy!)

Sadly Dex Bard is way better at picking locks than rogue. Take 3 levels of anything with open locks than go 27 Bard. Extended greater heroism & inspire competence is +10. Wear some open locks gear and you can make DC 99 with lockpicks. I wouldn't go stealth bard though since it makes zero RP sense to hide and sing at the same time but it does work mechanically.
