Field of the Dead - Shoppe of Forgotten Mementos

This is not an auction. OOC at bottom of first post with details.
Image
In one particular area of the vast Fields of the Dead can sometimes be heard a faint melody. Those who follow the direction of the melody will find a ruins. From afar, a flickering light can be noticed from this remnant building. On approach, the silhouettes of several figures are noticeable. An unseen lute discordantly plucks notes, becoming more distinct the closer someone would get.

A small sign sits propped up against a rock outside. It seems to be magically illuminated with a dim glow. The sign reads:

"Shoppe of Forgotten Mementos"

Upon entry of what was once the building, it is evident that someone has put a small amount of effort towards the structure of the ruin. The mildly reinforced walls and ceiling seem to hold back more of the outside elements than they would otherwise suggest. The area feels warmer as well. Those inclined towards magic would note several delicately placed wards to make the "shoppe" more hospitable.

A cloaked figure sits on a stone step just inside the building, writing quietly in a large tome sprawled across her lap. Her hood is drawn up and her dark cloak is pulled around her to conceal everything except her gloved hands on the tome. When she moves, a soft metallic clink can be noticed under her cloak as the woman is likely wearing some kind of armor.

She seems to be the only person actually attending the wares laid out on blankets, each item with a few tattered sheets of paper next to it. The writing on the papers doesn't seem to have much to do with the items, instead being torn from journals or scribbled notes about people.

Each item apparently has a story associated, the nearby writings likely nearly nonsense to all but the owner of the items.

OOC bits:
I realize people (typically) want to put minimal effort into auction forums so here's a breakdown of what could be gleaned from speaking with the shopkeeper about the items and generally how this thread is intended to operate.

- It's not an auction. Only one or two visitors are realistically expected to be at the site at any given time. Consider each dialogue as an individual instance unique to your prospective buyer. Negotiations will be with the shopkeeper only, not against other posts.

- If asked, the shopkeeper is going by the name Zeda, an ex-mercenary. She otherwise has all the makings of your typical graceful elven swordslinger.

- I prefer roleplay in these kinds of threads. It's been ages since I've done an auction forum post because they are usually hugely disappointing for me. Posts are meant to be in character and worth the bother. If you feel like your character wouldn't wander here, don't post.

- I've placed an OOC * or ** by items the shopkeeper is not willing to part with for gold. SORRY IF THAT IS ALL THE COOL STUFF. Simply put, I'm doing this more for fun and I'm looking for a few things that I don't even know if they exist. So here's the stuff I'm potentially willing to part with and yes, each item does have a significant backstory for me, the player.

- * means the shopkeeper might be willing to sell it for gold.
- ** means the shopkeeper is unlikely to sell it for gold.

- The stuff I'm looking for is pretty open to interpretation. I might update the list as time goes on as this is sort of spur-of-the-moment for me. I have an interest in:
-- "holy" and "unholy" swords. Anything with a bladed edge really.
-- Anything kind of unique or powerful (I know, AH forum standard)
-- Think "Paladin"

- Things I'm not interested in, and again I'll probably update this list later on:
-- Anything I can buy from a store.
-- Most +3-ish stuff. Consider me elitist if you want.
-- Mithral things that aren't fullplate.

-Don't send me PMs about items. Post in the thread or not at all.

Mendel, while on his regular patrol over the Fields of the Dead notices the tracks leading to the abandoned ruins. Spoting the flickering light, Mendel approaches cautiously. Once there, he looks suspiciously to the cloaked figure.

He looks around, thinking that she could not be alone, then examines the items that are arranged on the floor.

"Why would someone sell those items... here of all places" Mendel asks the cloaked figure, with his eyes still fixed on the various items

The woman would look up from her writing and examine the interior speculatively in response to his question.

"Is there something wrong with this place? Aside from the occasional brigand and shambling skeleton, it's a quiet place for me to write."

She explains, as though it were an obvious answer.

"I think it's a rather nice location..."
She says as if to herself, returning to her writing, otherwise letting the man wander about as he wishes.

A most haggard and particularly disgruntled dwarf wanders in from the forsaken fields, a day of scavenging behind him. His gait is marked by a slight limp. He slumps down on a cairn stone just outside the dilapidated structure. The dwarf shrugs off his pack, awkwardly empty, plants an axe haft on the ground and rests his chin upon blood-smeared blade. Though trying to mask emotion, his interests are clearly piqued by the merchant offerings just inside.

While travelling from Soubar, Draviir notices a faint light emanating from the ruins in the Fields. Following the glow, he is left speechless as he walks through the entrance to the ruins. His eyes are drawn first to the hooded figure, then to the items laid out around the chamber.

"What is this? Some kind of trick? If all is as it seems then you are trading some exceptional items!"

He approaches the figure, "I have two swords that may be of interest ..." He goes on to describe them.

" ... I trade out of Soubar and would be quite interested in dealing with one such as yourself. I travel to the Gate to conduct business, but I shall return through this way in one days time. Let me know your thoughts then and we will decide whether or not we can trade."

Mendel looks over his shoulder towards the hooded figure.

"If you find it nice here then there is not much I can say..."
He looks back at the items and the sheets of paper around them. Not making much sense of them he asks her again

"So... What is it you trade here... And what are all these sheets of paper?"

The woman inside likely wouldn't realize that there was a man outside unless he was making some kind of racket. If she does know he's there, she seems content to let him sit outside peacefully while she continues to write in her tome.

The woman's interest is peaked by the mans initial words. "Some of them were tricks at one time. I'm glad they please you." She then listens to his description of the swords as she writes notes on a spare piece of paper. "Soubar..." She speaks the word aloud to herself as she writes another note. "I look forward to your return." The woman does indeed seem interested though perhaps more out of curiosity than any mercantile value.

Quietly pleased by the mans standoffish nature, the shopkeeper puts down her quill for the time being and addresses him. "Well to some they're just trinkets at best. To me they're memories I've grown tired of carrying. If something catches your interest, let me know."

She watches him traverse the room. "Don't mind the papers. They're mostly notes to remind me about the history of each item, at least what I know of it. You don't have to buy their stories, of course. Just another thing I'm trying to get rid of."

A huge wolf with glistering white fur appears atop a nearby hill. (///DC 10 on lore nature to identify as a winter wolf). The wolf seems far less aggressive and more intelligent than its wilder kin. Its light blue eyes piercing and entrancing.

Apparently curious about the gathering around the ruined building, the wolf cautiously observes the people inside(Spot check:69, spellcraft check:54), trying to discover if its an illusion played by the undead.

*A man in a black armor comes by, he is wearing a black hood with a mask his armor has gold markings, he is holding a long sword in one hand, keeping it down so not to seem threatening, and looking at what this is, his eyes flicker around the area scanning to see if something of interest catches his eyes. He stops when he sees the Dancing Gown*

That is an interesting piece of clothes *he says to the woman* How much do you want for it?

Looking around one more time the torn cloak catches his interest. He tries to read the papers sourounding it, then asks the hooded figure

"What happened to this cloak... and to its wearer?"

The shopkeeper wouldn't notice the wolf outside. The heavy tome she is writing in seems to be her sole interest for much of the time she'd be under observation.

The flickering light appears to be coming from several candles scattered around the interior. The silhouettes seem to lack actual form, a low tier enchantment placed on the open spaces viewed from outside.

There seems to be no trace of undead activity in immediate area.

Viewed from outside, the only noticeable occupant would be the shopkeeper.

Without looking away from her tome, she responds to the man.
"Thirty thousand if it's for you. Twenty if you intend to gift it to someone beloved." She scribbles out a word she had written with a tinge of angst, unrelated to her words.
"It's meant to be special."

"It started as most cloaks do, I suppose. I'm unsure if it had numerous owners before, but one in particular led an unfortunate lifestyle." She idly traces a gloved finger around the edge of the tome in her lap. "I was under the impression that they were a master assassin with a vengeance against orcs and humans."

"Most of the wear was borne of conflict. A story regarding crossbows comes to mind." A tone of mild amusement touches her voice. "Wearer unscathed, the cloak was struck several times and pinned against... a door I believe it was."

"I don't know what happened to that owner afterwards. The cloak was entrusted to one of their companions and then to me. I have reason to believe they're still alive somewhere, if that eases your conscience any."

She pauses a long moment before speaking again.

"Most elves tend to live long lives afterall."

*A bald young man with a windblown beard dashes from one point of cover to the next, a group of restless dead pursuing him in their typical, shambling gaits. The enrobed pilgrim, unencumbered by the bulk of protective armors surveys his surroundings, looking for a place of refuge from the pursuit. As the fearful man look frantically, he notices a light flickering in an enclosed portion of the ruins. Driven to desperation the monk sprints from his his place of cover, symbol of the Morninglord swinging wildly from its crude chain about his neck. Using his simple quarterstaff he vaults the last bit of distance, leaping and rolling into the enclosure. He rights himself quickly, head on a swivel, looking for the source of the light to determine friend or foe.*

Mendels' eyes light up at the mention of a Master assassin seeking vengeance against Orcs.

"Very interesting history. I am certain there is more about it..."

He pauses, looking at the cloak while listening to the female with great interest, chuckles at the comment about elves and their long lives.

"I would be willing to trade for that cloak... maybe give a bit more to learn more about its history as well."

After a small pause, Mendel looks towards herto notice her reaction. He then continues

"Gold is not something I have, however I possess a couple of interesting blades and swords"

The wolf dashes super-naturally fast form the hill top to the undead mass, a burst of storm light his wake. With a great leap, as if it is weightless, it lands in the middle of the animated corpses, the remain of one unfortunate adventurer pinned down by its paws.

Brief sound of claws and teeth on bones followed by a deadly silence. The undead lie in a circle with the great beast standing in its center, all the unholy are put to rest again and non will be getting back up soon.

The wolf licks its paws clean, apparently not minding the scent of corruption. It then trotts lightly back to his hill top, sits down, and turns its gaze back to the small ruined building, patiently observing and waiting.
