Potion brewing cost formula?

Unread post by =Thunderbolt= »

The cost to brew a potion in NWN2 is equal to Caster Level * Spell Level * 50 gp.

Taken straight from NWN2wiki and it seems simple enough. However...
However in the formula caster level is NOT the character's caster level but the resulting caster level of the potion to be created. For example, a potion of Bull's Strength always has a caster level of 15. As such, it costs 15 * 2 * 50 = 1500 gp to make.
So now I have a level 30 wizard/master alchemist and brew a potion of bull's strenght it won't be cl 30 potion, but 15? Can someone explain this I'm too dumb to understand this and is this even the way things go here in BG?

The formula is still correct except the level of the potion is no longer fixed in most cases.
What was the fixed caster level in the original NWN2 seems to now be a minimum caster level.

If you brewed a CL 30 elixir of Bull's Strength the cost would be:
2 (Spell Level) x 30 (Caster Level) x 50 = 3000gp

So that second quote should look more like:
However in the formula caster level is NOT the character's caster level but the resulting caster level of the potion to be created. For example, a potion of Bull's Strength always that has a caster level of 15. As such, it will cost 15 * 2 * 50 = 1500 gp to make.

What if in this case the character caster level is lower than 15? The potion created will still be 15 cl regardless?

I think so. That's the way it used to work. My brewer is now too high level to test that though.

Higher level would mean less costly potions? I don't know sounds like people would just grind to max level asap.

Anyway the costs probably deserve/have seperate topic to arguefightin.

I think I can test it. Might take some time though.

You can change the CL for elixirs, not potions.

Oops, sorry I assumed you had been poking around the forums and knew that already.

Potions: Restricted to spell level 3 and caster level 15
Elixirs (Master Alchemist only): Restricted to spell level 7 and caster level 30

I'm not sure what happens if you make a potion when the character's caster level is lower than the minimum for a potion or elixir, I'd guess it makes it at the minimum which is what it did before the changes that allowed you to choose the caster level.

Prior this I had created one potion in this game during first play of OC years ago. Yeah, maybe I should have poked the forum more than a few searches.
