Mielikki, Racism, and Orcs- I have an issue here.
I play a ranger of Mielikki. Quite the cynical guy, he is. He is VERY devoted to Mielikki and will not hesitate to fight in defense of his faith.
One of Mielikki's central tenets is 'All orcs are evil, they're soulless abominations.'
People on BG:TSCC have an approach towards anti-orc and anti-drow racism that does not fit the time period. Orcs are kill first, ask later in almost all cases, accepted as monsters no better than beholders and gnolls. However, someone (not naming names) was just today calling Mielikki an 'evil wench' for advocating the death of orcs, and calling it evil to hunt them.
This doesn't fit the setting, does it? In Salvatore's books, orcs are always-chaotic-evil death monsters and are treated as monsters by Drizzt himself- the good drow agrees that they are all monsters. Clearly, there is a problem here.

1. Server has had many "goodly" Orcs, so...experience of the individual can often trump the will of the God(s). Which leads me to my next point:
2. The will of Gods is little feared, when you play a lvl 30 invincible, eternal, being.
2. The will of Gods is little feared, when you play a lvl 30 invincible, eternal, being.

If you were invincible and eternal, you would be a god. I have never seen a depiction of the gods, even during the Time of Troubles, that put them below 50th level. With all the 30th level clerics around, the will of the gods is definitely feared.Steve wrote:1. depends on their belief system. Although I know few who consider it evil to kill orcs. However, "hunting orcs", there may be some who consider it evil, but those who did would not consider Meilikki an "evil wench".fearknight2003 wrote:I play a ranger of Mielikki. The "belief systems" of players on this server are dictated by modern sensibilities on race and religion, for the most part, and not by the setting. FearKnight is right about how people here don't tend to follow the Forgotten Realms setting, where orcs are indeed regarded by 99% of the world as evil, irredeemable monsters that are no different from any other monster you might run into and which should be culled from existence. Heck, I saw a grey orc running around Baldur's Gate the other day, undisguised and without an AFK tag, and people would just give him the standard *Nod* as they passed.NeOmega wrote:depends on their belief system. There are also lots of special snowflakes here, too, including good orcs and people who believe that all orcs should be given a fair chance.

Even though the game setting is at a time covered in the books. The world ispes much different due to the freedom of the many that that make it. There is far more diversity in our shared world than in the books written by Salvatore. With this diversity, comes the cultural effects of it. Not only is this inevitable but it is desirable as far as i am concerned. To make this world alive it needs all types. The racist and the tolerant, I am glad for it all.

Re: Mielikki, Racism, and Orcs- I have an issue here.
I just skimmed through Faiths and Pantheons and Forgotten Realms Campaign Setting entries about Mielikki and I didn't see any mention of orcs. Says they oppose Malar, Talos and Talona. Also an interesting mention about Red Wizards.
Nothing about orcs but most of the principles seem to indicate orcs as being prime candidates for opposition.
Is the source you're citing from 4th or 5th edition by chance? We typically stick to 2nd edition lore (as it is before the Time of Troubles, in line with our current year) and sometimes supplement with 3rd edition stuff as needed.
I think it's been an intermittent effort by several players to re-ignite anti-orc roleplay over the years. It gained quite a bit of traction in the last couple years especially. Orcs are barred from entry in several settlements along the Sword Coast as well.
You're welcome to roleplay orc hatred as much as you'd like. I'm sure some of our veterans might have advice about it even. Just remember to adhere to our PvP Guidelines.

Half orcs aren't orcs.
Aside from that, many elven and human towns were wiped off the face of northern Faerun quite recently, as in the past 300 years or so. That generates hate. Picture a town close to yours ( in real life I mean ) was wiped by a type of human recently ( religion, race, skin color, etc ). You might turn bigot, I mean hateful, and understandably so.
That being said, hostile, kill on sight RP is kind of short sighted and boring. It's best to allow players to play races that fits the setting ; why grey orcs are allowed in here is beyond me.
The problem is that most of us are liberal minded and from big cities, when Faerun's world is a very racist, countryside like setting.

The fact is; you're all racist for being racist against orcs. "Oh well Flasmix, they raid and pillage for food and supplies."
Yes, because the humans, elves and dwarves force the orcs to live in unfarmable waste lands. They groom the orcs so that just to get the basic necessities of life, they have to raid. A Catch 22 scenario. Let us rise up and stop the persecution of our misunderstood friends.
#OrcLivesMatters is real and only by spreading the word can we bring social justice to the orcs. It goes a step further though, you all must give the orcs your money and rare magical items. It is only fair. It is a step towards paying back the reparations the goodly races owe our kin.

Wirg to Pug: "Iz lat dun?"
Pugratix to a snarky militia man: "Mmmm. Not yet. I will live for hundreds of years and be heralded as one of the greatest forces of destruction on the face of the world. The only thing you can destroy is the outhouse."

FR books aren't technically official lore, and I don't rememebr that being part of melikki's dogma:fearknight2003 wrote: I'm taking the anti-Orc thing from... (SPOILERS ON LEGEND OF DRIZZT PAST HERE)
Catti-Brie says that Mielikki wants them all dead after spending a century hearing the song and teachings of Mielikki.

My point being no one ever got a lightning bolt on their head for insulting a God (hence, your 'evil wench' anecdote).fearknight2003 wrote: If you were invincible and eternal, you would be a god. What you are talking about, in the OP, is correct: BGTSCC has a ton of "alternative views" when it comes to the FR setting. It is called Custom Server History. lol.
Also to mention: BGTSCC is a medium RP Server, at best. Many have not invested much if any time in FR Lore, nor read any books taking place in the Forgotten Realms. And even if they did, they would probably prefer to develop the "living server" aspect of a PW, which is to change the setting to fit their own ideals, rather than the ideals setup through the Creators of FR.
