I'm having trouble with... everything, really. I make a character, and when I find a group I have fun, but when I log off and read what people are saying on my brother's screen if he was nearby I hear things IC like 'stupidest wizard ever'. The problem is, that's me being stupid; wizard had 23 intelligence. I just can't play any character convincingly, much less a smart one.
Also, it's really hard to find a group. The majority of people I've seen are mid-to-high level and only travel in already-formed groups of close friends. It's hard to solo things, and I don't think the server is built for endless grinding to 30, but I can't find anyone who isn't in-an-established-circle-of-friends,-go-away.

Is this just me being bad at stuff? Or is this an actually a thing?
Also, how do I stop looking like an idiot?

I tried to teach you. (PS, I dont talk smack about people unless they are bad, like litterers, rush looters, or RP bullies). But server crashed right before we started, and you insisted that shieldless characters just suck, and deleted Merrick. And my character was a level 4 or 5, just like merrick was.

And you can give hints, but nothing counts like actually playing through with a pro. Yeah, you need to use potions... but when? When do you take the second. Which do you save \for which areas? This is all stuff that would take forever to write, and honestly, who wants to when you can RP it out?

That was my experience with you. I wont say it was "negative", it was just "newb". At least you didn't rush for every monster drop and leave lag-litter everywhere like some "pros" still do.

And just because you are intelligent, doesn't mean you have wisdom. So you can play a new wizard to the area, without much wisdom.

In my experience, you play very abrasive, in-your-face PCs. While that in and of itself is not a bad thing, your otherwise strong start tends to dissolve into childish shenanigans after a time. As your brother's PC is my PC's closest friend, I've encountered almost all of your PCs - and they're all interchangeable. They all insult your brother's PC or have some grudge against him. They all run amok at some point. They all use mechanical violence... typically spells. My biggest piece of advice right now is: play a PC that isn't so antagonistic, and don't worry about what your brother is doing with his PC.

If your focus is solely upon grinding, then it will be hard for you to find a consistent group, because consistent groups intermingle RP with their adventures. Let the story find you first, and the levels and loot will follow it.

///I enjoyed the bit of rp I had with him. Have him meet with other rangers. Nod nod. they can help you solidify your character. I would also be interested in meeting again as my one time rp was not really one a one on one type which is essential when your developing your character.

I have run into the same issues as you, I personally stay away from caster classes as they usually require more lore knowledge, and my lore is really limited. So I stick to melee types: fighters, barbarians, rogues etc. I would aim to just have fun if I were you, don't think too much about what other characters say about you when you aren't there, unless it is a specific trait of your character to be liked by everyone.

I don't know what your character's level is, I often play my barbarian who is level 13, feel free to toss me a tell and we can RP or party up.

And that was a negative, not newb experience. You were fair at first, but towards the end you started grabbing everything that dropped in the ruins n. of beregost. That's when I dropped party on you, including the final chest, when you took both mine and your loot. You would think the new system would stop people doing things like that, but you found a way.

I didn't grab your loot. How would I even do that?

I did not 'grab everything' either...

From my experience with chests using this mechanic, when two people look into an open chest, it will only show loot for the first person to open it. It also uses up your "turn" on the chest, so you can't get your "proper" loot from it. With that in mind, if you peeked into the chest while ne0mega opened it, the loot you saw, and the loot you grabbed, was ne0mega's.

This was the case in Engines and in Myths so I suspect the same applies here. Solving it is simple: wait your turn.

Yes, you have to wait for your turn. The "you looted this chest" counter changes when you peek, no matter whose loot is in the chest or who opened it.

To answer your first post, in my opinion it's easy to take the do's and don'ts of roleplaying in a mechanical-driven game for granted. While some of it can be assumed, a lot of knowing what works and what doesn't comes down to practice, to research, to see what works for you and what doesn't, and, again, practice. Your roleplaying style may even change over time as you learn, but you won't notice the change if you don't practice.

I have samples of my old writing and roleplaying attempts around, and when I look at them, I want to punch my past self in the nose. But regardless how awful my writing was, people encouraged me to write, so I kept writing and looking for ways to improve my writing, write some more, improve on that, loop. And here I am, still writing, and still trying to improve.

Same with you. Just keep writing and improving, and who knows? A few years later, you'll look back and see this topic and stifle the urge to punch yourself in the nose.

Sometimes you find that real-life you isn't up the the ability to play the character. I realize this EVERY TIME I try to play some nature-loving druid. Likewise, I have a hard time with pushy religious clerics or Paladins. They just don't work for me. In this same vein, I cannot play a solitary type of character... resulting with me losing interest in my rangers and druids because of it.

Sometimes you will really surprise yourself on concepts that work for your personality and style of play. Paws is a martial/simpleton. Somehow that character is WAY funnier than *I* am. How that happens is a mystery to me. Likewise, my social roguish sorts of characters I really enjoy playing and I play those characters well.

Point is, you will find that some character types are a better fit for the RL you. You'll also find things that you *aren't* able to play well.

I know this is hard to do because of the flexibility of the creator...but I noticed in your sig you have a lot of characters for someone who has only been there since Sep. When I got good/deep RP, it was after playing one character, and one character only for 3+ months (Usually much longer, but that's a min.) and focusing on them and their story. I would suggest creating and thinking up a good character with a fun background you would enjoy playing that may be a bit easier if you are new to RP, then sticking with just that character all the way to epic's.

Role play, approach people at the fire, don't worry too much about leveling up fast. Your level does not = your RP potential. You will get there eventually, make the RP first, worry about leveling as you go. Most important, choose something you really want to RP as, don't go for the latest flavour power build, go with what you find fun (Whatever it is.) and something not too complicated to RP if you are having trouble with that aspect.
