I don't know yet, I but I'm hoping that it was only the power supply that blew up.

I ordered a new one, but it won't be here until tomorrow.

yes I did

and I did that because it was late, I took a quick look and didn't see any blown caps on the MB, a blown PSU is prolly the most likely, fastest and cheapest to fix problem - plus it'll help me eliminate what's "not" wrong —if I put in a new PSU and the computer won't POST, then it's something else.

and I can always return the PSU if the old one turns out to be fine

Technically speaking, we should be replacing our PSUs annually to ensure no expensive accidents occur with it dying. Replacing it is never a bad idea, unless you're very budgeted.

Even then, it's a good idea to keep a pristine, spare PSU at home to test if it's the problem the next time the PC dies.

Same thing happened to me during the big DM event for Doron Amar a few days ago..POOF..literally..

Got a power supply with 100 W extra than my comp needed. Been running for 8 years, no problem. Corsair is a pretty good brand.

I hope it's just the PSU and you're back in action by the weekend. But if it's not, some of the techies here can probably help you troubleshoot it?

my old/current PSU is a Corsair HX850.

Which I think should have been enough for my system, but with that loud pop maybe not.

(here's a link I found with someone"s HX850 dying)

now, maybe it wasn't the PSU that went bad, I guess it could have been the motherboard's VRM, but I really don't feel like taking the whole machine apart yet if I don't have to.
