Looking for advice about New York

Unread post by mrm3ntalist »

I am about to accept a job offer and move from the small fishing village i am living at the moment, to New York.

There are two possible areas I can leave in - Mt Vernon and New Rochelle. I have no idea about those two areas ( other than infor from google maps ) but i am thinking of New Rochelle since it is closer to the ocean. Any advice about those two locations ( crime, enternaiment, sightseeing, commute etc )?

New Rochelle gets a decent plug on wikipedia, although the references seem awfully out of date:
Wikipedia wrote:Crime statistics
According to the New Rochelle Police Department, New Rochelle is the safest city of its size in New York State and the fifth safest city of its size in the United States.[25] The majority of crimes committed within New Rochelle are non-violent property crimes, including burglary, larceny-theft, motor vehicle theft, and arson. Property crime, on a scale of 1 (low crime) to 10, is 4 compared to the US average of 3. Violent crime (murder and nonnegligent manslaughter, forcible rape, robbery, and aggravated assault) is 3, equal to the US average.[26]

I'm afraid my experience with New York is pretty limited. I have had a lot of friends from and in the state, but I can't really give you useful advice on where to reside.

That being said, though, congratulations on the new job! That's terribly exciting!

America'll be that much better with a Mrm3ntalist in town. :)

I live in New York State, bud. Not near the city but I've been a few times and I can probably find out some details for you if you wish. Shoot me a PM and we can chat.

I am sure you will flourish in New York.
It will be an adjustment I am sure, but you will do great.

For my sake, my family on both sides fled the city back in the Mid-20th Century.
That being said, I have found these videos to be a useful resource upon my travels there:

If you read between the lines, there is actually some good advice there 8-)

This is true of every big city that I've been to in the world, from NYC to Madrid to London. Watch your wallet/passport on the subway and in any sort of crowded area. In general I've found Europe worse for pickpocketing than the states though. The states are worse when it comes to mugging/strongarm robbery.

You forgot to mention Chicago has almost a doubled crime rate compared to New York. I'd come for the Deep Dish, but I fear my wallet would be stolen so I can't afford it. Nice try Krieg!

New Rochelle/ Mt. Vernon is a bit north of the city, so I have no knowledge of that area, though people I know who've been there say New Rochelle is better - Mt. Vernon has some sketchy parts. All I can tell you is you want to stay away from living on Long Island. They get the worst of any weather and all of the roads are always in some kind of traffic incident. The further away you are from Manhattan, the better you are as well.

If you have to go into Manhattan, you'll probably want to take mass transit. Its a lot like other major cities in the world where parking is scarce, and what you think is parking is a parking ticket or a tow. Entertainment, there is so much to do in the city. In the summer, you have the Long Island beaches and the New Jersey shore within distance. There is generally a lot to do.

While not a perfect preventative measure, I can tell you not acting like a tourist and being careful not to get caught in awe of the lights does work in most cases.
