Hey experts,

Any advice on the viability and play style of the following build? I've never played either a combat caster or a summoner... Would this work and, if yes, how would you approach most battles?

Summoning-caster-melee build is easy... play a cleric. :)

Cleric or favored soul would probably be best. Just be wary of the banishment spells that can take your summoned creatures out instantly in the fight. Buff yourself and your creatures with divine spells and your all set.

Also, rangers get pets as I understand it and so can druids if you want to play a nature based summoner.

I might drop one of the great charismas in favor of battlecaster and get a mith fullplate, and just use eagle's splendor.

In addition, if you are buffing both yourself and your summons for combat you will probably not have much room for offensive spells, although there are some good choices. But you get the stormsinger goodies to make up for some of this weakness (if you can really call a fuly buffed divine weak).

All in all it looks like a really cool build, and fun to play, kudos.

Thanks so far, guys. I meant to ask about the particular build I linked to - which is a cleric, as many of you suggest.

I thought of Battlecaster as well (though I don't think I could afford that fullplate), but 21 CHA is needed for EDM. I suppose I could give up STR but that trade might not be worth it.

Are there any views on the domains? Strength Domain seems tempting - apart from the Divine Power flexibility, this domain would also give Enlarge Person. Or Plant, which would keep the Amulet slot free in exchange of -1 universal saves. Would it be worth giving up Blindfight or Luck for these? And, if so, which?

Pure cleric with some animal domain or pure druid is probably better.

For Summoner-Caster (maybe not melee) you could go sorceror. That's what I'm doing; use your best summon, buff it up, go invisible.

A stormsinger's level only stacks with the effects of all bardic music if the stormsinger choose bardic spell casting. If for example, a stormsinger chooses to progress in wizard spell casting, they will not advance the effects of their existing bardic music. They will still advance the songs per day in this case so the number of times the stormsingers songs can be used will increase.
BGTSCC-specific change to the class.

That being the case I can't see that Stormsinger is a very good PrC for a Cleric.

If you want summons then you can't really beat pure Druid. Druids have a few nasty spells and they get a great DC with Owl's Insight. Otherwise any caster can load up on summons spells.

You may be right. I took the Stormsinger mainly for the Storm song magic it offers (to increase the offensive magic arsenal of the low WIS cleric). If that magic is not useful, the class isn't either.
