As I suggested elsewhere:

Why don't you head-hunt talent for the staff as well? Not everyone volunteer on their own. Some never thought of it, others don't think they got it in them or they barely look anywhere on the forum but the RP fora, and many other reasons.

Doesn't cost anything to ask. And the worst thing that could happen would be getting a "no thank you".

It's not a preferred method, however. Lots of things have to combine to make someone available and willing to DM.

And asking someone to DM implies some kind of sponsorship through the application process and such...

Which we don't do. Everyone has the same process.



You might not have noticed this, but no one has become a DM since I've been an HDM without going through the complete DM Team application review.

In the past, a few DMs have -somehow- slipped into the team... That doesn't fly anymore.

It's definitely good advice. I never applied to be a DM myself. I was scouted by the existing team, and I suppose you could argue that it worked out.

But right now we're a little short-handed, so we are specifically counting on people to step up to the bat -- especially if they can cover a time zone that's not getting much coverage, or DM for groups that don't currently receive a lot of DM attention (e.g. the Underdark).

If you have a creative streak, some patience, a good handle on the server's lore, and a willingness to put the other players first, you'll probably make a great DM, and we'd love to see your application.

Tips:

1) Put a little bit of effort into the application. DMing can be worlds of fun, but it is also a serious responsibility, and the DMs will want evidence that you take it as seriously as they do.
2) Bring a positive, constructive attitude. And let it show in your application and your interactions in game and on the forums.
3) Understand that the other players have to come first once you're a DM, for as long as you're a DM, and that by taking up the DM mantle you are essentially volunteering to put your own character on the backburner. In exchange, though, you get to play an absolutely defining role in the server's future, work with an amazing team of dedicated volunteers just like yourself, and shape the world and its stories like never before.

So far we've received two applications. Those of you still thinking about it, you have about a week before we start our review and make some selections!

So far none of the applicants specialize in the Underdark, so there's still a need there.

So far only one of the applicants represents the play times that have little DM coverage right now, so there's also still a need there.

With the server reviving and reinventing itself after a long fallow fields period, now's a really exciting time to be a part of its staff. The current DM team has more dev support than any we've ever had, and will play a key role in determining this place's future!

I really want to emphasize this as well. In joining the DM team this recruiting period, there is a strong likelihood that you will eventually be having an outsize role in shaping the future direction of the server, especially if you graduate to full DM. We are at a very exciting crossroads right now staff wide! Apply to join up! Be a part of it!
