Spellbook and Holy symbol as IG items

Whole RcR thing and specially when it camed to wizards, made me remember about something that was present in one of my old servers.
Wizard's Spellbook and Preist's Holy-symbol were actual items carried in your inventory. How did it worked?
Spellbook remembered all the spells which character learned and know. IT could be given away to other wizard and this way the character could use all spells that book contained. Perfect for rcr when you have to buy spells again or to try and find some more important ones, which is not that easy and pain in the rear, but that's also how it should work. Other aspect as an RP and mechanical one. Wizard could be disarmed by removing a book from his inventory, he still could use spells that he had already meditated but he couldn't meditate new load of them without his book. Pretty much same thing happened with priests and their Holy Symbols. They couldn't use divine magic without symbol in their inventory, and they were connected with the actual deity in your character's sheet, so you couldn't use symbol of other deity than your own. In case of faith change, DM had to give a new symbol to the player.
Everything pretty much lorewise and with huge RP flavour. Many ridiculous situations were avoided thanks to this system, for example when wizards blew up the prison door after one night of meditating fireballs. It happened.
Personally, I would like to see that here. I don't know how difficult that might be to bring to life, but I thought I might bring it up for any case. Just a suggestion.
