Well, if the trusty frying pan doesnt get them, the meat cleaver, hatchet or poker will.
It is known spells and certain clerical feats also have a promising responses in said population of undead.

Try one or two of the approaches above prior to ordering about face turn followed by quick march?

Perhaps it was a DM spawn? The lowliest level 0 zombies in the DM creator comes with a healthy 5/- resistance to physical

No, it's consistent. There's a type of zombie in the graveyard with 5/- physical. It takes forever to beat them with a low strength level 1 or 2.

Have you tried a slashing weapon on them ?

Zombies are supposed to be resistant... its skeletons which are weak to bludgeoning. Try slashing...
