First Name: Adellise
Last Name: Wendry
Adellise is a lovely woman with pale skin, hard and smooth like a beautiful white stone. Her eyes are entirely black, showing no other color within them. Her hair, as well, is the darkest black, so much so that it all seems to blend together, making her short silky hair look almost solid.
Her face has a great similarity to a theater mask and even the way her hair frames her face adds to this appearance.
Her voice is light and sweet and her inhumanly smooth and solid skin makes it highly difficult to determine her age. She seems healthy enough, and stands at about five and a half feet in height.
Adellise usually covers her face, however, with a porcelain mask that appears to have once been the face of a very large doll. Her hands are covered with gloves made from pieces of this large doll’s hands, further confirming that this is where these parts came from.
She also wears a black robe over a suit of armor as well as a large black hood and cape, with a white sash draped from her belt in the front.
Background: Adellise lived all her life in a small area within the east side of the Neverwinter Wood. Although a small community had gathered and built their houses there, everyone kept to themselves as much as possible, not even taking the time to agree on a name for the home they had created. Despite the solitary nature of the village, Adellise was completely happy there with her parents and three sisters.
Once in a while, Adellise would travel through the wood to visit her grandmother, Rose Mary Wendry, who was too old to leave her own home, but also too set in her ways to be taken closer to her family.
All seemed well, until one day, a group of men, two humans, a dwarf, and a tiefling, arrived with dark intent. They had found the grandmother and demanded that she pay them a large sum of money or else they would murder her cats and force her to cook them all, knowing that the old woman was too weak to refuse them.
Hearing of this, but not knowing exactly when the men would return for the money, or even if more might join them, Adellise collected as much coin as she could and began a trip to her grandmother’s house, planning to spend a month there until the men showed up and she could pay them on her grandmother’s behalf.
But on the way, Adellise spotted some mushrooms that seemed mysterious to her as they glowed and shimmered in the night. She approached them for a closer look and was met by a strange man that she had never seen before. He had a simple appearance yet something seemed very out of place about him, and very dangerous. Adellise nervously excused herself as quickly as she could, hoping to move on away from him, but he caught her by the arm with a smirk and turned her to face him. “You’re a very bad witch”, he stated accusingly before releasing his grip on her arm with a cackle. Adellise ran fearfully away between the trees in the direction that would lead to her grandmother’s house, hoping with all of her heart that the man wouldn’t follow her, but as she ran she noticed that the trees no longer seemed familiar. She turned to look back, and the man was nowhere to be seen, though she was sure she hadn’t quite gone out of sight of him yet. She faced forward again and the trees seemed to spin and fade about her as she drove herself forward over the roots and leaves. She considered the appearance of the world around her may have been just a trick of her eyes, after all it was very dark that night, but as she neared the place where the home of her grandmother should have been, she suddenly found herself at the end of the trees about her and at the edge of a road. Although she had never been beyond her forest home before and knew nothing of the outside world, she knew that something had gone terribly wrong. Her grandmother lived a long way away from the edge of the forest and there was no way that she could have possibly missed the house and gone that distance, even at the speed at which she had traveled.
Alone and afraid, Adellise turned back, hoping beyond hope that she was just mistaken and perhaps her grandmother was right around the corner. Perhaps she had been wrong about the location of her house all this time. But no, as hard as she tried, she couldn’t find anything familiar and she knew that something had caused her to end up far away from where she belonged. How far, it was hard to say. She made her way back to the road and could hear wolves howling off among the trees. Suddenly, one of the wolves leaped out at her, apparently starving and possibly rabid. It knocked her to her back and tried to bite her face, but she struggled against it in a wild panic. Just as it seemed the wolf might finally have her for dinner, Adellise managed to lift her hand up against its chest and fire a blast of dark energy into it, silencing and stilling the animal forever. She took a breath to calm herself and sighed. Her power had saved her, but was it worth it? Could she possibly… no. She shook the thought from her mind, deciding it was best not to dwell on that particular issue. She could only deal with one problem at a time right then and she needed a safe place to rest after her tiring fight with the wolf.
Just then, a caravan came rolling down the road. A few of the wagons were empty and contained seating, as if meant for carrying travelers to different locations. The driver seemed friendly enough, and offered Adellise a ride to the nearest city. Not knowing what else to do, as the wolves were likely waiting to try and eat her once more, she climbed into the wagon and soon fell fast asleep.
Upon arriving at Baldur’s Gate, Adellise fully realized how far from home she might actually be. How long had the wagon ride been? Ten days? She hoped not, but it felt like it, though she had slept through much of the trip. It was odd; she had never been so sleepy before. Even after the night of the wolf attack, she should have recovered her energy, but somehow she found it easy to simply close her eyes and let the road pass her by.
Now she had no idea how to get back home, or even to the place where she had come out of the forest. Yet she knew that somehow she wasn’t anywhere near her home, and she needed to find a way back as soon as possible.
Perhaps someone could help or knew what to do. It was frightening, being so lost and alone… and she worried of what would become of her beloved grandmother if she didn’t return.
