Gave the logs to the gnome merchant the dialog say he gives 150 gold.
You then have the option to pay his debt to Mags and if you accept the dialog say he hands you another 150 gold. (however got no xp for the first part and 150 gold (only once)).
As i talked to Mags the dialog says the debt was 200 gold. (got 500xp for paying her)
After having done the gnome and maltz quest, both dialog options are still available in the dialog menu. (Got any more work available? I delivered the documents to....)

I noticed that when you select that dialog option again it won't reset the quest for you right away. But when selected anyway and the server resets or crashes after, it will appear in your journal again as not yet done. The same seems to be the case with Puddleboots' quest.
