Reserve feats, and the common gish (arcane failure?)

Unread post by BronaStormbrew »

Hi all! I've been playing my EK Tyral for awhile, and I am in love with the reserve feats, but they got me to thinking. They don't seem to be effected by spell failure. I wear armor, (and taken still spell) but was curious. Should I be using the reserve spells?

Preepic, possibly due to decent damage.

Epic, no due to more or less worthless damage per round.
This is where your empowered/maximized greater fireburst or other high damage AoE shines.

Thus, better to use that feat to improve spell power on your regular spells.
"Drojal zhah obdoluth dorb'd streeak, Lueth dro zhah zhaunau dorb'd ogglin."
"Existence is empty without chaos, Life is boring without enemies." So sayeth Lady Lolth, Queen of Chaos.

PC: Natalya, wandering enchantress.

Thanks! I was afraid I was abusing the system to be honest. I'll definitely switch to some stronger spells later :)

I've always seen the reserve feats as a 'developed ability', hence not cast from a spell book. They can create some interesting RP/background for your character regarding how he obtained them.

On using them though, the save DC's aren't that high and anything with evasion (rogue, monks etc) will take no damage at all.

To use your thread to raise another question though, as I have a Denier/scribe char with 3 runes already and will be taking a fourth, what options are there to raise the DC's?

I know casting ability stat (Ie. INT) and spell level increase the DC's for the Rune reserve feats, anything else?

I like your description of how the feat comes about! For Tyral, I've always described it as "almost" casting the spell. Reciting the beginning and the end, and leaving out the middle..or something close to that. Still, I feel a little guilty, as I used the _____ out of my rune to get me through the awkward phases.

No need to feel guilty at all, seriously (especially when you reach epic). The only limit is imagination with regard to how you gained/use your runes.

Ie. My toon Sandrue is a wizard with a monk dip. He committed to the monk training to help discipline his mind because when he was younger he killed someone when he lost control of his magic. Now, as a follower of Denier (Master of Runes), he has different runes on his hands for which he uses his monk Ki to fire-up, with an arcane chant, as often as he likes (albeit with a cooldown).

If you have fire runes, maybe they are a blessing from Kossouth. Acid, Tyrona. Maybe you can cast lightning runes because you were struck by lightning. An ancient rune stone that you carry that was passed down to you, a tribal tattoo given to you by a mysterious shaman, maybe they are just a function of the weapon you wield (You can edit desc IG).

I do not know Tyral's back-story, but having a reserve feat can become an interesting part of it.
