Not sure I'm doing this right.

Unread post by EremesGuile92 »

Trying to play as this build: http://nwn2db.com/build/?180378

Currently level 3 and having a hard time in the graveyard. The melee zombies absorb 5 damage off every attack from my 1d6 mace, so I usually don't even bother trying to fight them. Everything else is still somewhat hard, sometimes I'll get lucky and one shot the weak skeletons on the first turn. For 7 experience points.

Besides the experience being significantly slower now that I'm level 3, I seem to be getting my ass kicked even harder, suddenly I'm getting crit for 10 a lot in there and I only have 27 max health with the +5 health backpack. You'd think with 20 AC while most of these mobs have a +0-2 AB that I wouldn't be getting hit much, but I end up having to run out and rest sometimes without even getting a single kill in.

Is there anything more productive I could be doing, or is this just part of the game I need to brute force my way through?

Well, you could talk to other players there and join a party - that would help most. ;)

Other than that - a rogue build is difficult to play on his first levels.
You need equipment and therefore coin - with str 10 you wont carry much and have to leave all the heavier loot for others.

Maybe try another area like Soubar or bandit cave in farmlands north.
But joining a party is the best advise.

Against players.... we get critted a LOT. I mean,,, out of 10 swings, 4 or 5 of those hits can be crits. Where we might get 1 crit out of 10 hits.

Undead is harder since they are immune to crits.

Party up is the easy answer... but it can be hard to find groups. There are the wolves to the north... and quests within Baldur's Gate that can be done without combat and you can get around 2,500 ish xp a week from.

Rogues ARE tough, like mages in the beginning.

If you see me pop in server, feel free to send me a tell, I'll help get you off the ground (er... all IC like,,,,,)

Also, there are no restrictions for equipment anymore. That might help you out (remember you dont have uncanny dodge yet, so you lose your dex bonus if flanked). Get some +2 dodge, deflect and natural armor and you should be on your way.

But rogue IS hard at the start and midway I think.
If the text is this color, I am on duty, everything else is just my humble opinion.

Thank you all for the suggestions. I haven't seen anyone that seemed to want to party and I'm quite shy about RPing. I freeze up and end up not typing anything, earlier someone talked to me around the fire in Eastern Farmlands and I hit my stealth mode and ignored them.

I'll try to find those quests in Baldur's Gate, 2500 xp would be a huge help.

I had a harder time in the bandit cave than the graveyard since I couldn't rest and when I tried to escape while in a tight spot, the wolves spawned in the way of the exit and almost blocked me from getting away.

I'm not sure where else there are plentiful mobs, maybe there are more wolves outside of the cave that I just don't know about. Or maybe I should just bite the bullet and buy a bunch of potions instead of relying on resting. I've been saving and have 4556 gold.

Currently at 4298 xp off mainly graveyard grinding, did one quest in the bandit cave for 200 xp.

The way to level up a low lvl rogue solo is to use a ranged weapon and corner sneak (eg kobolds in the Hilltop Ruins). Use stealth to get to sneak attack range, attack and then run. If you score a hit, likely your bonus sneak attack damage will kill the target. If there are no more mobs chasing you after the kill, go back into stealth mode and lurk for a new target.

If you get chased or don't hit/kill the target, use stealth mode after closing a door in the mobs face or running around a corner. The mobs will rush around after you and then stop because they've lost line of sight. Sneak attack, run, rinse & repeat :)

Once you're high enough level to take a few hits or get a bit more AC, or have Two Weapon Fighting etc, start using melee hit & run tactics a bit more.

This was the best way to solo level a rogue. However there is a bug with stealth it seams and the monsters will still base you and wack you then walk away. However if your quick enough your sneak attack will trigger. But with your str that means more often then not a single attack from you will not drop a kolbold.

Stealth is not in your favor anywhere at level due to silly reasons. Truth is pairing with another person is the best way to level and you will do it way faster. The other player flanks giving you great sneaks with range or meleee. Any player who is cool will love a rogue to flank with as your damage will mean they take less hits. Less healing. Meaning you can clear stuff faster.

Honestly solo leveling a rogue takes twice as long if not longer then partying. This isn't true with all classes, but rogue is that.

Remember you score XP for picking locks and that does add up.

If your a quick player at level 3/4 you can try the BG sewers. There are pillars everywhere and near by you at all times and you can run behind to stealth. The sad side is the 6 second cool down so if you miss and slow on breaking line of sight you will go down, also stealth bug. However there is good treasure and a bunch of exits so you can rest easy and get back in quick. The XP is solid and there are quests linked with the sewer. A missing ring and rat tails.

Though once again your way better off partying and things will be tedious and tough till level 21.
My personal view is in red, for I am fancy.

when do you play? I would be happy to play one of my low level toons to get you past the rogue/wizard wall. I rp my higher lvl toon so when I play my low lvl its purely for the grind and will mimiumly rp if that is your wish. so when are your hours?

I'm basically free from 7AM-11PM PST/PDT everyday. Schedule would be even more flexible if I didn't have to keep my mom's new puppies on that sleep schedule.

Just hit level 5 earlier before I took a break, let me know, I'd be happy to party whenever.

My advice?

Wait with the leveling and get comfortable rping. The people you meet and level with at low level, through mid level and up to the high levels are likely the ones you will form bonds/rp attachments with and create interesting rp scenarios in the epic levels when leveling is... well.. its a chore.

If completely new to rp or nervous, find a mentor or send people a whisper in game asking for help, only 80% of us will spit, kick or try and kill you for your insolence, the other 20% are afk.

There should also be wolves and bandits on an area along the river. Turn left before the bridge after transition from BG farmlands.
