Started a rogue. Walked around a bit, came across a quest to kill some moles digging up a farm or something, walked all over the farm, didn't find anything then got 1-shotted by a wolf somewhere after I wandered off to another zone, then went to fugue. Noticed I didn't have any weapons. Is there loot drop on death or do I need to find some weapons? Also had no idea how to stealth, I couldn't find the ability.
Then started a sorc, talked to a random wizard in the underdark zone who sent me on a quest to kill a basilisk. He teleports me and I get 1 shotted by a goblin after noticing my only spell was summon familiar.
Am I doing something wrong?

Honestly you are traveling into high level areas.
Surface: The holes are for a rat named old dodger which you get the quest from the guy at the stall near by the farm plot. Your character is trying to catch the rat, so you have to find him then run over it. You can procur some basic weapons at Maltz's in Baldur's Gate. There's various quests inside the walls that can get you started. Here's a post on them.

If you are looking to fight as your rogue, best pick up a bludgeoning weapon and head to the undead, which shows on your map at Farmlands east.
As for the Underdark you just talked to the guy too soon is all. You're far too low a level to hit up the gobbies. Best thing to do is talk to droin the duergar in the bazaar area and the duerger trader by the beholder merchant. Easy quests there. After that you can pick up the quests from the guards in the passage, From there you fight the kobolds, bugbears, and easier gobos.
If you need a helping hand I do not mind just send me a tell. I'm ValerieJean IG as well.
Oh also the Hide button is in the bottom right hand corner of your screen purple thing hiding behind a wall.

One of the best items to buy for a level 1 char is the backpack of the hearty, which gives extra hitpoints. Can make the difference between being one shotted or surviving to run away.
Also there are cheaper weapons at the "basic arms" merchant in eastern farmlands, near the level 1 graveyard.

Also as a mention.
Rogue + Sorc are both tough classes to level as your first character unless you have a group.

I'd advice to play at least some of official campaign to get familiar with base mechanics.

How do I do that?

What he means by "official campaign" is the main single-player campaign.

Oh you mean without the server? I've done that before. I'm familiar enough, but don't recall ever starting without items or spells. I thought I at least picked my spells at first level, but perhaps that was nwn1. The campaign is a bit more guided at least.

If it's been a while since you played NWN DEFINITELY play through the single player campaign first, particularly if you play a hard-to-master class such as sorcerors and rogues.
This server is probably one of the hardest to play on if you don't have friends or an established character to give advanced items to your newbie characters. I've been playing here for almost 10 years and I still get suprised at how hard it is if you don't min-max your builds.

Thanks for the info. I'll go ahead and run through the campaign. Would you mind expanding on what you mean about the serving being difficult? I've seen a few posts with similar comments on the server being difficult. What makes it difficult compared to other servers or to the main campaign?

The server's not as generous in terms of XP as other servers out there, and it can take a few months of dedicated play to get from level 1 to level 30. Some long-time players never get a character to level 30.
The spawns can also be pretty challenging, and some of the dungeons (and the bosses inside of the dungeons) are designed to be taken on with a party.
A lot of long-term players can solo many of the maps, just because they literally have the maps and the spawns memorized by now, and they know the strategies and equipment they need to succeed there. But as a new player entering a dungeon for the first time, it definitely helps to have a friend or two go with you. It's also usually more fun, in my opinion, to have someone to roleplay with while conquering a dungeon as opposed to running around solo; but then again, some people really do enjoy the solo grind.
It doesn't hurt to ask for help from other characters too. If you're having trouble with something, and your character knows a wizard or a cleric, why not try asking them for some spells to help you out? Maybe offer to pay a few coins for some protection magic before you hit the dungeon?

Just be wary, for spells do not last forever.
If you don't have a spellcasting friend, you can also invest in potions for temporary buffs. Barkskin potions and the like can give you a nice boost to your AC at early and mid levels that's hard to get elsewhere if you're not a spellcaster yourself.

I suggest you stock up on potions from the merchant near the Baldur's gate... Gate. Potions of Shield, Barkskin, Mage Armour, and a few others. Raising your Use Magic Device skill will also help, since it will allow you access to spell scrolls. All these will help you with the grind and help smooth out the problems with your character build.
Don't try to solo areas above level 10 unless you know what you are doing. Best to get experience with a party of other people first and they will help. The enemy AI is different from the official campaign, they're not necessarily smarter but they use MANY more abilities. It's better for someone to warn you beforehand, than to run straight into combat and end up getting killed.
All that said, the difficulty that helps the game. Like I said I've been playing here for *years* but I've never got a character beyond level 20. It's simply fun to try new builds and new RP.

The UD is a harsh place, not a place to go to if you do not the basics of your build. That said lots of new stuff down there, and its beautifully designed, Sshamath.
Have a read here first if not sure about where to go in the UD, it will help you a lot.

If you are really struggling with those early levels in the UD (especially as a caster), you could always create a surface PC and level it a few levels (much easier up top), then rcr it into a UD character, just to start you off.
Happy questing!

What does RCR mean? From context I've deduced it's the servers rules on "re rolling" but keeping some of your exp? I just don't know what the actual abbreviation leaves. Thanks for the guide I willlook at it!

'Retired character rebuilds'. You can use the xp-transfer NPC in the nexus to delete a character and transfer the XP to a new character (the character can't have gained any XP or the XP-transfer is denied).
The percentage of XP transferred is determined by th elevel of the character being deleted. Any character up to level 10 can transfer 100% of their XP to your new character. I believe for every level above 10 the XP transferred is reduced by 5% (only 50% of XP is transferred at level 20).
Very handy.
