Tarrasque.
Yes, the monster that says the DM hates you
Theses the classics; Just like Cowbells there's never enough Goblinoids. But spawns greatly depends on what world, and atmosphere your going for.

Give them an
ixitxachitl
They can automatically pass the encounter if one of the characters (and therefore player!) can correctly say the name of the creature.

Have them read a pamphlet they found in some forgotten cellar, after they read it, a whisper will tell them
"7 days away, the banshee will hunt her prey, unless you solve the riddle of the way... then you will all die that day" and basically do rings with them

I have always wanted to dm a zombie apocalypse with a group. The group is summoned to an island city for whatever reason. A group of necromancers cause a outbreak or open a portal..causing a zombie outbreak in the city when the party shows up. These are special zombies who's bite slowly turns others. (Cure disease will cure/prevent you from turning). They may require a head shot or special weapons to hurt them. So all hell breaks loose and the group have to discover and defeat the necros to save the day.

No beast grabs the imagination and attention of the youth like the Owl Bear.
Bear + Owl = Lawls, OMG my Face.
Its a fun image and both are beasts new gamers can relate to.

Black Puddings, Gelatinous Cube and Green Slime...

Kids love that stuff right? Does Nickelodeon still slime people?

(feeling old all of a sudden....)
