Rename Gr. Sanctuary to Etherealness

We have the 8th circle spell "Pass Wall" already. Nothing prevents Etherealness from existing, all previous arguements against it are moot.

I agree with this... It's always seemed weird for Arcane casters to be casting a greater version of a divine spell...

I concur. Though would like to see ethereal also regain its invisible state as it should, only seen through True Seeing. Closer to its origins.

as far as i know there is actually problems mixing ethereal and invis that causes both to simply fail and not work

tho this was also before the invis change/fix that allows you to disappear right away without breaking LOS, so maybe that one can be extended to ethereal and it wouldnt cause issues?

honestly idk how pass wall even made it in after the change seeing as they didnt want people going thru walls... but hey w/e...

logically the two cant coexist tho, being pass wall and etherealness as "gr sanct."

etherealness would have to be reverted or pass wall would have to be removed bc as it is now the two are conflicting with the ruling

Pass Wall got added more or less accidentally with the huge spell update in March. Though now I'm curious: Does it actually work, or is it a flavor spell at the moment? I haven't actually tried it out.

It works at certain places. Most Guild halls are shielded from it and any areas warded against teleport are warded against it.

Also AoE effects still you hit you. Which I know is always a huge headache for the IC vs IG thing! But G Sanc does seem to define what the spell actually does in NWN 2 better than Etheralness. Though honestly I don't think it matters what it is called as the only time this will come up is if for some reason a bunch of PCs want to try to walk through walls in a DM event.

As I understand it, the inability to mechanically pass through walls was only part of why Etherealness's name was changed to Greater Sanctuary.

When the spell was called Etherealness, there was confusion about whether other players could see an "Ethereal" caster. Everyone RP'd it differently. Changing it to Greater Sanctuary was meant to clarify that other players can see the caster, by saying that the caster is not ethereal. This was a way to work around the mechanical limits at the time (there was no fix to make Etherealness mechanically work the way it does in pen and paper).

If Greater Sanctuary were to be renamed back to Etherealness, it would be nice avoid the issues described above. So the following should happen:
  • Make the player(s) vanish from sight, like Invisibility does
  • Change Blindsight and See Invisibility so they can't see through Etherealness
  • And, as suggested in OP, give Etherealness the Pass Wall mechanics
  • While we're at it, do the same things for Ethereal Jaunt and the Spirit Shaman's Spirit Journey feat

Arent there many boots of Etherealness around? Does that mean that every player that has a pair can walk through walls? :roll: :D
