Half Orc Barbarian

Unread post by clean_slate »

Hey guys, I was thinking about rolling a Half Orc Barbarian inspired by Daelan Red Tiger from the OC. New changes to the class moved me into this direction :

Starting stats :

STR 18 (22 final)
DEX 14
CON 17 (21 final)
INT 10
WIS 8
CHA 8

Leveling progression : Barbarian 30

Feats (in order)

Luck of Heroes, Able Learner, Ice Troll Berserker, Weapon Focus, Improved Critical, Blind Fight, Knockdown, Toughness, Steadfast Determination, Power Attack, Great STR I, Epic Prowess, Expose Weakness, Epic Rage, EDR I, EDR II, EDR III.

With Primal Rage amulet I will be able to rage 22 minutes per day so no need for Extend Rage/Extra Rages.

My only doubt is weapon choice. I checked that lovely warmace at BG epic shop and it's almost too good to pass up (with changes to warmace critical modifier) as it has bonus 1d4 damage, +4 EB and Keen property which essentially means +1 to AC with the current build (Armor skin instead of Imp Crit).

However, I'm more into polearms, so I was thinking about spear or halberd. What do you think, and about the build as a whole?

I think you get one less feat than you listed.

I would never waste an epic feat on improved crit. You took able learner, UMD and a keen wand, regardless of weapon choice.

Try to end STR on an odd number, there is a belt that grants +3 STR/+3 CON.

Taking Knockdown without Improved Knockdown is kind of a throwaway. Either take IKD or exchange KD and grab IPA. You should really grab IPA regardless.

Weapon choice is more a personal/RP one, but if you want easy access to an epic weapon your choices are a bit more limited...

EDIT: regarding feats, you get 7 pre-epic 1-18, then you get a epic feats at 21, 23, 25, 27 and 29. As a Barbarian you get bonus feats at 10, 20, 24, 28 and 30. 7 + 5 + 5 = 17 total feats unless my math is wrong. 9 pre-epic, 8 epic.

I count 17 feats? And regarding Strength, isn't cap set at +12? With Epic Rage you get +10 to Strength, so you will only be able to utilize +2 from items which means 22 Strength score is OK.

I think Knockdown is good on a Barbarian since he will have 34 STR which, for the purposes of KD calculation check, is as having 26 STR and IKD which is also fine.

IPA - I'm not sure. -6 AB will do more harm than good against higher AC enemies. Not worth it IMO, unless on a FB.

I like the build overall, I always had a thing for pure builds.

yep, counted steadfast twice...sorry.

Also forgot about +12 Epic Rage STR

IPA with a two handed weapon is +18 damage for -6 AB and it is not like you can't chose to lower to regular PA or turn off as needed. Still would at minimum replace Improved Crit with either IPA or IKD. Wands of Keen or Blunt Force are cheap.

Remind me please, where to buy these wands (of keen), how much do they last and how much do they cost and is the property on the weapon dispelable? That is an interesting alternative to the feat, if they aren't expensive.

There are limited use items available in Avernus and people sell wands on the auction, usually for around 5k, then you can use the recharge tool on them as well. Yes it's dispellable, but it basically costs about 100 gold/use...when not dispelled it lasts 50 minutes real time.

If the race isn't big of a deal, I would advise to pick Earth Genasi.

That way you can keep your starting CON and STR stats but also pump Intelligence to 14 with which you can practically replace Able Learner with Improved Knockdown because you will really want to have that.

You can also go different route and pump STR while ignoring CON and EDR feats. You will have to find a way to mitigate your low Will saves though, and pick some Extended Rage feats.

Whetstones are sold in the BG Harbour - Blushing Mermaid store (basement level). They cast Keen and you don't need UMD to use them.

Lodestones too, for the blunt weapon users among us.
The best part is that the keen from the stones cannot be dispelled.
Makes sense, seeing as the effect is not magical in nature. Take that casters! One for the little guy!

As far as I have ever seen regular spells of keen and weapon of impact cannot be dispelled either. Last I knew magical vestment also was undispellable as well as greater magic weapon.

Are those items reusable? How much does the effect last?

I see. Those are all magic spells though, and therefore definitely should be dispellable.
Are these bugs fixable without ruining whetstones/lodestones?
AlfarinIcebreaker wrote:Are those items reusable? How much does the effect last?
They have 50 uses per stone. Not re-chargeable. They cost about 7.5k. The effect lasts 45 minutes/use, I think. Might be longer.

It's dependent upon how the spell is cast and is, unfortunately not a fixable exploit/bug.
