Northlander Hewing

The damage calculation for critical hits with Northlander Hewing seems to be buggy. When enabled my normal hits always deal 18 physical damage. But when I crit the physical damage varies, and is often below the 18 of a normal hit :?

This is with unarmed fighting using gloves with no enchantment bonus, only ab bonus.

PS I hope the image worked!

Not sure something can be done about it but what kind of build are you using ?

Maybe he failed to confirm the crit?

Monk/SS/SF/F so unarmed combat always. NH already comes pre-baked with a lot of negatives (-3 attacks, -2 ab, -2 ac), no need for more. :(

@Nachti Even if he didn't confirm the crit, the physical damage should be exactly the same as a normal hit. I will test tonight whether it happens with a confirmed crit as well.

Definitely happens when you actually crit. The phys damage is often way below a normal hit. Like 15 instead of 22.

Any news on this?

Problem spotted but no idea how to fix it, crits seem to be calculated otherwis, your damage is lower on crits because you have lots of variable damage.

Thanks for looking into it Valefort. Basically losing crits is a pretty big loss. Just lost an apr to the changed calculation on the feat as well :(

Now that you bring it up, I have seen the critical hit damage vary on my melee build as well. I got nothing but weapon EB and NH active... So I guess the crit damage might be rolling weapon damage dice instead of just doing the full damage.

And on a monk with plenty of dices .. yep :|

A 2d6 could just deal 2 points of damage while a 3d10 could just deal 3 points of damage.

12*2 = 24
2*2 = 4

I have a suggestion then. Another problem with NH is that it doesn't scale properly with lost attacks. Going from 3 to 4 or 5 to 6 apr doesn't give you anything as NH just eats your new attack. Give the feat +damage for each lost attack (+1 or +2 should do it). This would bring it in line with the theme of the other combat feats, give it a proper progression feel as you level, and would compensate for the unintentional issues with crits.

:? I guess that would be a little bit more damage for my high strength barbarian...

You choose do do an extreme str build, not everyone does that.
Any buff would be appreciated, to make that feat useful on a STR 20-24 melee build.

:?: Are you saying it is too much on your already super powerful barbarian, or is it so little you won't notice the effect?
