Just a note that we had some hiccups with the forum this morning.

Our forum exceeds our host's size limits and was deleted as a result. I've restored it to the backup they left for us (4/3/2017 at roughly 5 AM EST) but they've informed me that unless we upgrade our hosting plan that it will be deleted again.

We are going to try to get in touch with them today to discuss our options for upgrading our hosting package, but in a worst-case scenario I can't guarantee anything that is posted currently will be restored if they delete our database again (though there's also a chance everything will work out fine, and I was successfully able to restore everything this time).

My suggestion is to either not post anything you're too afraid of losing or keep a local backup of important posts so you can resubmit them if need be if there are any further service interruptions.

I'll post again when something is worked out, but it may be a day or two (or more, depending on GoDaddy's turnaround speed for issues like this) before all of this is cleared up, and in the meantime the forums may go down again at any time and we may not be able to restore posts before the point of this one (again, our current latest backup is from 4/3/2017 at 5:00 AM EST).

It's been a stressful morning and now I'd like to probably try to get some sleep. :P Please bear with us while we get this worked out.

They said we're in the clear with our updated account package. I suppose we can stop worrying about sudden deletion of the forums for now. :)

Unfortunately, sudden deletions of the forums remains a concern even after we updated our forum hosting services.

As a result of our current host's inability or unwillingness to fix the problem for us, we will probably be switching to a new host for the forums.

We will be making a backup of the forums before we do the transfer, but there is a chance that with the domain change and the host change that we might lose some posts and PMs in the shuffle. So please be aware of that.

We'll make an announcement here when we've backed up the forums. I hope to be able to do the transfer this weekend, as they've told us they plan to delete our forums again on May 7. :?

15 June 2017

Hi everyone! I just wanted to write a few words as it's been nearly a year, now, since the server officially transitioned over to new leadership.

As many of you know, the server's previous administrator, Luna, disappeared unexpectedly in March 2016 (following a fairly significant server update). For several months, I tried to keep things together with the aim being to return it to Luna once he returned; but as systems began to fail, I was convinced that in order to save the server it was necessary that we move it, its finances, and its forums under my direct control.

I recruited several people to help me with this gargantuan task -- perhaps the greatest helper of whom was Endelyon (who would become our co-administrator), followed by Zanniej, and, later, Aspect of Sorrow -- and together we moved the old barn to a brand new field. We officially flipped the "on" switch on the new server on June 22, 2016 (after a couple of earlier attempts that went awry, and after having previously migrated the forums and finances).

Luna later checked in (for those of you who missed the thread: viewtopic.php?f=136&t=58290), which was a relief for those of us who thought something awful might have happened. In reality, life simply got in the way, and he was unable to continue maintaining the server on top of all of his real world responsibilities. (Something I can certainly understand!)

But the reason I'm writing this message is less to recap history, and more to thank everyone who's stuck with us this past year.

I think it's fair to say that we inherited a troubled server. Months of stagnancy had sapped the morale of many on staff, particularly in the developer branches and the QC corner, and the update in March was less of a cure than it was intended to be (as it had damaged the server's overall playability in sometimes significant ways), we were struggling with a DDOS attacker who seemed entirely intent on seeing this place vanish for good, and Endelyon and myself were both trying to find our places as the server's new administrators (when neither of us really wanted the job to begin with).

We put out the call for help, and the community stepped forward. Our DMs have rarely been more active or more responsive to players (I know that there are some who will say that they're not responsive enough, but this is always a work in progress for a volunteer corps serving a community that far outnumbers them -- and I've watched them plug away day after day at hundreds of player requests this past year, on top of their own plots and metacampaigns, where in years past we didn't even keep track of player requests, let alone make it a goal to try to answer 100% of them); our devs have never been so active (and together managed to iron out the worst of the March 2016 bugs); Quality Control revived itself in a big way, and slowly won over a sometimes suspicious player base (who did not always understand that it was the devs and admins who decided what goes in or does not go in game, and who wrongly laid blame for blocked or passed content on QC instead by virtue of QC taking on the active and unpopular job of explaining why the decisions had been made); and several new staff groups were created, including the Forum Moderators and the Media Team. On top of all of this, the players themselves have remained supportive and enthusiastic about this group project. Perhaps more important than everything else, everyone described above has continued playing and loving this game.

I think we still have a ways to go before we've reached our true potential. Good things have happened -- I think the server's positions on many things are far more transparent and predictable than ever before (from our public finances to our staff codes of conduct to what will or will not probably get a forum thread locked), I think our staff itself is fantastically active and engaged in the community, and I hear that our players are, from all accounts, probably among the best that we've had when it comes to roleplaying ability and a shared willingness to write stories in cooperation with each other. But we have had our speed bumps as well. We've passed bad rules and had to redact them, we've lost staff members and players over disagreements with how the new administration has chosen to run things, and we've not vanquished all of our bugs just yet. In truth, those things will probably never truly end -- people will always disagree on how things should be done, leadership will make mistakes, and new bugs will come as new content is introduced -- but I think history has so far borne out that we'll always strive to do our best.

And, ultimately, the reason we do strive to do our best is because of all of you.

Speaking for myself alone, I don't know that I love this game. I really don't even play this game. It's been maybe two years since I've played it seriously. (I do want to try to get into it again, someday, as I do think it's problematic that one of the server's administrators doesn't even play the game he claims to administrate -- but it seems that whenever I have free time, I seem to spend it all on improving the server or answering PMs or writing posts like this one instead of actually playing the game!)

I don't really love the Forgotten Realms. I have always homebrewed my settings, personally.

I don't even love D&D. Well. OK. I do love D&D -- but not enough to keep me here on that alone!

No, above everything, what I love is this community. I think it's a really wonderful group of people that we have here, sharing an amazing hobby. Seeing all of your talent, and hearing all of your stories, is endlessly inspiring to me. I know that people have found hours of fun on this server; I know that families have grown closer together on this server; I know that people have met on this server and wound up married in real life because of this server; I know that non-native English speakers have become fluent in English by playing this server (and sometimes even landed good jobs because of this); I know that books have been written and art has been made because of this server; and I know that people have gained confidence in themselves where before they had little thanks to the friendships they've established and the lessons they've learned in their time on this server.

All of those things and so much more is what makes this whole place so "worth it" to me. And I hope that a year from now we can all look back together again and see that we've only continued to improve this place for ourselves and for the little group of like-hearted (if not always like-minded) souls that we've together gathered here at BG:TSCC.

Thanks, everyone, for keeping us going long enough to celebrate this first anniversary. Baldur's Gate is fast approaching 10 years of age (the server got its start in February of 2008, though arguably really only got going strong around November 2008).

And I hope we'll be around for a long time to come.

Just a heads up that our server host will be performing some maintenance on our physical computer tomorrow morning (probably sometime in the next 4-6 hours).

They have stated that they'll try to minimize their impact on us, but we could see some lag during this process -- or even a complete shutdown of the server (if they have to restart the machine).

It may be down for only a short while, or for a few hours. Either way, we'll try to get it up and running again ASAP if it does go down.

Thanks everyone for your understanding!

Just a heads-up that we are aware on the dev-side of the issues with lag and crashing of the module that have prevailed over the last few weeks. I realize there has been much speculation (ranging from a new batch of DDOS attacks to instability from the latest update to some kind of antics from our recently resident hacker) but we have identified the issue to be related to use of the persistent storage system, so I wanted to post to sort of quell everyone's fears.

It doesn't happen in every case, and many people are still able to continue to use the storage without issue, but for some players it is causing lag for the entire server until they stop accessing the storage system. Since this is used frequently (but not continuously), it is why the lag comes in intermittent spikes.

We're taking steps to try to reproduce the issue (and have some other working theories) but so far have met with minimal success. If we're unable to reproduce the issue soon we'll likely disable the storage temporarily (or set it to withdraw only) until we can get the issue identified and worked out (or perhaps switch to a more efficient DB software than MySQL).

We apologize for the inconvenience this has caused. Please bear with us while we get it sorted. In the mean time, there is no reason that most people shouldn't be able to use the storage system, but try to do so sparingly, and if you think your storage use seems to be causing the server to lag it probably is. :P

Hey everyone, please be advised that we have ordered the web services of a new forum host to try and resolve the lingering forum issues we've been dealing with the past few months (and this past month in particular).

We'll be making the transition over to the new host ASAP. Possibly as early as within the next 24-48 hours -- and hopefully no later than the end of this weekend.

I just want everyone to know this is happening, just in case we lose a few posts or PMs in the transfer process. I would minimize long, heavy posts or critical PMs until the transfer is completed.

Also, be advised that there may be several hours (even up to a day or two) where there might be no forum services at all while the domain is transferred to the new host.

We're undergoing another round of DDOS attacks. As a result Aspect of Sorrow turned on our DDOS mitigation protocols once more and to be able to access the game you'll first need to click the link on the player counter at the top of the forum (where it says "click here" and try again in 5 minutes).

It would be immensely helpful if everyone who reads this could please try your best to increase player awareness of this by sending notices to your guilds, Skype groups, Discord servers, etc. since inevitably this post might get buried and someone might not see it!

As before these measures are temporary and should be lifted as soon as the attacker grows bored and moves on again.

Bumped for visibility/awareness of the above post. Please keep in mind that despite it saying to try again in 5 minutes, we've had some reports of not being able to connect for up to a half an hour. Use the link, be patient, and for most people you'll be able to get in.

8 July 2017

For everyone's awareness, we are planning the introduction of some balance-based changes which have the potential to impact existing character builds.

The short version is that Evasion and Improved Evasion will no longer work while wearing medium armor or heavy armor. It will only work in no armor or light armor.

To compensate, Fighter/Master-at-Arms/Barbarian/Paladin classes will receive a feat at level 8 that grants the following benefits:
- Wearing heavy armor will convey 20% elemental resistance
- Medium armor will grant 15% elemental resistance

If this content is introduced this month or early next month, we are thinking of implementing a one-month 100% RCR period -- likely from August 1st to August 31st.

Right now the details are still being discussed, and there's not yet a hard timetable; but I wanted to make a note of this to make everyone aware of the fact that there could be a 100% RCR period coming up soon.

Thank you!

This is a general notice that the 100% RCR has been postponed and will now be starting AUGUST 3rd, 2017 following that day's update.

If we keep to our Monday/Thursday update schedule this means it will most likely end on September 4th, 2017, though this is subject to change if things don't go as planned.

Given the time it looks like the 100% RCR/evasion changes will be postponed again. Instead of giving a specific date this time I'll just make a post here when we get the update in.

Sorry for the inconvenience, but check back for an announcement in the coming days.
