'Wilderness / Open PVP area'

Unread post by DM Lobo »

The topic of PVP is something that has been cropping up a lot recently, though it is important to bare in mind this is an RP only server I understand a good chunk of our players enjoy PVP as part of their RP. To remedy this problem I have come up with the idea to have an area on the map (as long as players are made aware OOCly before entering) where PVP consent is automatically granted when you enter a sort of 'wilderness' aka a place for outlaws / bandits etc...

Good toons can go there looking to bring order and justice, while bad toons can go there looking for loot and power, netural toons can go looking for loot or to pick the remains.

The area can be filled with high level chests and high level encounters and should look like a Barren wasteland (though does not have to be but just an idea)

I would like to hear your thoughts on this.

I got to say Lobo I REALLY love this idea. I'm just not sure why you chose to post it in this thread? It seems general discussion would be a better place.

I don't remember of if anyone here remembers or knows about DAOC. (Dark Age of Camelot)

This is how they rolled. So you had 3 factions. Or countries that had certain race types as part of their country. Each race started in their own country where they pursued the storyline and went about moving through that VAST game. I do mean it was VAST. There are places that could take 20+ minutes to get to by horse. 10+ if you flew by Wyvern.........

Anyway the point was that between each of the realms in the center of them all was a Field of Battle where there were keeps and things that you could occupy and the PvP rules were KOS. No out. No announcement. There was no such thing as griefing there either. You went into that area fully knowing that your arse was in enemy territory and behind enemy lines. Never had issues there with people getting all pissy pants over losses either.

Point being I am all for an arena style area with places to occupy and fight over. I love that shit! I do not go out looking for PvP but I would for sure participate in a FOB style area for funz! :D

I remember my 8 man group with a skald pulling the giant into a keep once in the frost area, the giant which when looking up you could only see to his knee.. was fun times, great game!

Because of twinking rules and this being an RP server it's counterproductive to that end as well as it can (and very likely will)end up bleeding over to neighboring areas and be a headache to DMs. You also don't want to reward players for basically OOC PVP, this isn't WoW.

A Arena / gladiatorial map, however, could be a nice touch with a corresponding tab on the forums. Though this could result in players choosing mechanically superior races and builds and indirectly stunting RP in other ways.

We could have a warzone map. But it will be just a place for people to duel and blow off steam.

I agree that this is a RP server, but maybe this can be the Arena (like in Elder Scrolls series) with a DM who can plan for fight nights. Different themes like Free for all, team deathmatch, capture the flag, kill the elf, etc.

With small rewards for their time doing the events, players can feel like they accomplished something as a team or individual and feel like the entire server is working together.

The work on the DM (once everything establishes) would be minimal and they can schedule these fight nights up and folks can have some fun.

Edit - Rules

Things like disabling teleport... have everyone debuffed upon entering to prevent "buffbots" would need to be set up. So everyone is on an even playing field.

I don't see what the difference of this is versus say the multitude of player run instances, such as the ones arakes99 oversees. Players who want to be a part of it consent to the PvP involved, has it's set of rules, and award options. Boiled down, the same as what's proposed. Consent by presence, PvP, reward.

The problem I foresee with something like this is there is no way to make it something involving RP. It's really just an OOC arena where you can mess around and PvP. It's not something I'm looking for on an RP server.

It would be cool if there was a rp purpose to the place, lets say it opens up now and then due to a event (Gold has been found in the mines, first to find the node/hold it for 30 min etc) And reward.

But constant pvp for pvp sake? I think we can come up with better reasons to use it.

Could also be just lawless country where drows/bandits/such could live/trade/have HQ's which can be taken over by other groups and held, or deals could be made.

DAoC Zerg-fests look fun for the first few times, then you realize that your paladin/warrior/armsman/whatever is useless. The pinnacle of DAoC pvp was always 8v8. I have never seen a mmorpg with such a high skill ceiling. It has not been surpassed to this day, in terms of quality of pvp, and I honestly doubt it ever will be.

Too bad they shot themselves in the foot with the way they implemented and released ToA. Players wanted pvp, not being forced into grinding. It is even more sad when you think about the fact that the game ended up being so much more complex and better better due to all those features that they used to force people to grind. To this day, when I remember trying to setup qbars for a pac healer, I just get a headache.
