Wanted to build a Paladin/Cavalier that used Favored Power Attack against the likes of Outsiders and Undead. Good idea? Don't want to gimp my buffs too hard by dropping CL though, that's main worry. I guess a traditional smiter might be a better route, but I'm interested in suggestions.

You can't 'gimp your buffs' by taking Cavalier because kits are not Prcs. They are full progression base classes. A Paladin 11/Cavalier 19 is the same as Paladin 30, including bonus feats, spell slots & caster level.

It is a very good idea and you can spend a couple of feats to go for favored power attack agains one or two FEs. It is not needed though but can help.
The Shield Slam that you get for free as a cavalier works very well with High STR ( you get +8 from spells ) as does Imp. Knockdown if you spend to feats to take it. You end up with two nice disables then.
