Darkness Descriptor

Unread post by ElderWitch »

Hello,

I wonder, shouldn't Shadow Shield, Shadow Conjuration, Grater Shadow Conjuration, and Shades have this descriptor? And perhaps lure shadow demon? So far I have only seen it in Darkness and Deez's Repulsive Shadow Barrier.

Thanks

unlikely but i guess it depends on what it even means, and given darkness and barrier give concealment and the others do not my guess would be it has something to do with abilities that see thru magical darkness and would negate the concealment bonus

Well in the D&D 3.5 Player's Handbook the Shadow conjuration spells have this descriptor, and so Simulacrum. Considering the class Shadow adept depends on this descriptor I think it must be added to those spells related.

It would have mechanical effects (higher CL / DC) for Shadow Adepts.
If I remember correctly.

Their [darkness] spells become harder to dispel, deal more damage, and are harder to resist.
Shadow Adepts don't need a boost.

But it might be okay to do this regardless. I'm not sure if its a big thing.

Does the bonus from the Darkness descriptor stack with them being Illusions though? The description on the wiki (and general experience) suggest they should not, so the mechanical effect of adding Darkness shouldn't change much? I may be wrong, and I'm sure Ras would know so I probably am :D

Spells with the darkness descriptor gain roughly double the bonus you would get from using an illusion spell, with the shadow weave. Doesn't stack.

So +7 CL and +4 DC. Instead of +4 CL / + 2 DC.
It only affects like 2 spells currently.

Expanding it to a couple of other spells warrants a balance discussion.
You'd give them an extra +3 CL and +2 DC on top of their current bonus (if illusion or evocation)

Seems to me like the only DC based spells of relevance here is Web and Delayed Blast Fireball?

I'd personally like to see more descriptors added. Such as EVIL to actually evil spells
