Attacks of Opportunity vs Healer's Kit usage

Unread post by Vermilion »

This won't be a popular question, but why does the use of a healer's kit not attract Attacks of Opportunity where drinking a potion does?

Most PCs I've seen RP the use of healer's kits as "applying bandages" or the like, yet they can be used in combat with no risk. It seems silly* that uncorking and drinking a Potion of Cure Critical Wounds opens a PC up to attacks while bandaging/applying a poultice/whatever does not.

Not asking for the AoO to be removed from potion use. :)

* - yes, it's also silly that there is magic/dragons/weightless gold coins/countless obtuse reductionist arguments every time realism is invoked.

No idea ! And no one knows I bet :D

Except perhaps a developer from Obsidian who would realize he forgot to do this if you told him about it ...

probably that

in pnp healers kits are not normally used in combat and if they are the person being treated is pulled away first, so not done in someones face unlike with potions - you arent gonna move away just to drink a potion (move away also provokes AoO so you would be screwed either way), so probably something not thought of

Yeah, I was wondering if they'd misinterpreted the Standard Actions table in the PHB - obviously using a potion/oil attracts an AoO, but "activating any other magic item" doesn't. I suspect the correct treatment falls closer to the "stabilising a dying companion" line though, which should attract an AoO.

Actually 3.5 had the 5-foot step where you could step back 5 feet, drink potion, no AoO. However, you also have halberds that actually provide REACH, but can't be used at normal range, so you would have to drop the Halberd/glaive/what-have-you and pull out your longsword.

Point being, the ability to use healing kits without an AoO is kind of like a makeup for the inability to take a five foot step and drink a potion without attracting opportunity attacks. There are many PnP mechanics, such as trip that don't quite fit in the engine due to a number of factors, such as the real time combat vs. turn based and simple error on the part of developers.

But anyway, can Halberds be granted their proper reach?

And what mechanic explains the ability to use a healing kit 3x per round then? :P

With my two-handed sword I can reach over allies to attack from a second row... I am pretty sure that won't work with a long sword... It's this size category related? Or is there a range maybe?

Sorry guys, you're too close to use a halberd. Please use what you're using now, or take a couple of steps back and use a halberd (and make a new topic)

Well there is a downside to using a healing kit in combat in that you need to roll.
Out of combat you always roll 20.
Wont bother talking about realism with these kits, I assume they contain the same herbs etc used to brew healing potions.

This is very true! Harder to effectively perform first aid when there's a lizardman trying to eat your actual face, I guess.

Is it even possible to make existing actions affected by Attacks of Opportunity or would it be a custom script job? If that's the case, even I think the developers have other things better served by their talents :)

standard healers kits have everything needed to perform general first aid and can be used 10 times before the supplies run out

so bandages, ointments, basic herbs etcs, nothing rare or overly large like splints tho

*casts Ethereal, proceeds to buff/cast heal with impunity for 3-6mins*

Take out ethereal and I'm down with making heal kits harder to use. But so long as there is a saveless 'nah nah you can't hit me' button for true casters ingame I say leave the rest of us be.

Not to muddy the waters and go off-topic here but Greater Sanc/Ethereal Jaunt/Etherealness can be pierced by True Seeing now (probably including True Seeing granted from a creature skin, though I'm not 100% sure on this one).
