"Holy Sword - Can only be cast by lawful good characters. This includes being cast from a wand or scroll."

This seems to work as described, except UMD does not seem to be taken into account at all to use this from a scroll/wand for non-LG characters. It just "fizzles due to alignment" regardless of high UMD.


Shouldn't UMD be allowed to check use of this spell for non-LG characters?

Intended or not it is BS. Just my opinion. At least make it usable by all GOOD PCs and not just Lawful Good.

It is a paladin only (LG) spell that channels actual holy power directly into the weapon. Of all spells, I think this makes sense from an RP standpoint.

Mechanically it is fairly powerful, and so the argument can be made there as well.

This is coming from a guy that has been lugging around a worthless Holy Sword wand on my hotbar. Thanks for the reminder to deal with that.

NOthing about the spells description says it is only usable by LG. While a Paladin is LG the spell is only GOOD. Thank you.

From a QC standpoint the wands were discussed a year ago and agreed to leave as LG only. Doesn't mean mind can't change, but it is a very powerful spell and limiting the usage does make sense mechanically.

Yes to GOOD PCs only at least. CG, LG and NG. I get the evil idea but any good pc should be able to use this wand with UMD. Hell make it a high UMD at least. Maybe make the passing check take at least 20 UMD. Not like there are UMD items at large that are easy to up your UMD either.

The spell is incredibly expensive to use anyway. No one runs around with this thing to grind. It is a boss fight only wand and other PCs that are good could really use it for that now and again. Like I only use it for the VOD really and Grey Peaks. Or a DM monster boss.

Remember you also fixed the sticky bug on it and I presume that the real reason this was initially put LG was the sticky bug.

its intended and unlikely to be changed from the LG restriction, if i remember right there were a good number of DMs supporting that restriction at the time, so its not a simple matter of QC reverting the change

So I take it you have some really strong words in regards to the 5e Paladin? If you think 3.5 made things far too spell dependent and allowed for too much leeway in the code, 5e doesn't even require LG alignment any more!

LOL, we didn't take away anything that the Paladin has in Vanilla, we just gave them better spells. (though that was done before I even joined QC).

The kits are both enjoyable, balanced and quite good at what they specifically do. The fact they don't fit your vision doesn't make them less so. However, none of this has anything to do with the subject, I was just making a friendly observation on the continuing changes WotC has made in the new edition that further take the paladin away from what it was in 1/2e and how you envision it. Right or wrong, that is what the IP owner of D&D has continued to do.

It is bad enough that Paladins of Hoar are a thing in 3.5 ed DnD that people use as an excuse to be less moral and upstanding instead of using the lore properly and being at odds with such a two faced deity and facing a choice of converting/falling and becoming a good hearted Fighter, or falling anyway and becoming a non good corrupt enforcer. And there was a guy talking about Gray Guards.

I know! How dare a LAWFUL NEUTRAL god allow a LG paladin in their ranks!!!
