Menzoberranzan

Menzoberranzan, the city of spiders that was build by the sweat, blood and faith of Menzoberra and the kin she lead. It was a ruthless undertaking, battled on all sides by worshipers of Ghaunadaur, the wildlife and a clan of dwarves. They succeeded and established a city where they had killed Bindip, the leader of the dwarven clan.

A battle broke out between the two most powerful houses, house Nasadra and Thaeyalla which took the life of Menzoberra, House Baenre ultimately became the first house after the turmoil and banishment of house Nasadra. Another house Agrach Dyrr, an old house, second only to house Baenre in age. That is the house Xeyn was born in, as the second son of his house he was not really taken serious, that was until a fight between Xeyn and Esvena, the fifth daughter began, this was at the age of Xeyns adulthood, and he had been to the melee magthere and trained as a warrior. The fight was long and garnered attention and raised eyebrows, the watchers were surprised of Xeyns durability in the face of spell after spell from his sister. Yet he did not attack, the discipline he had gotten had stuck, he couldn’t and did not want to harm his sister physically, whether it was because of his own set of rules, or simply fear of the punishment that would come after, is unknown.

The Melee Magthere
Xeyn was trained in the melee magthere, the visage of the huge spider statue was something to behold, it was said that it could become animated against foes of Menzoberranzan, a truly fearsome golem. The training was not like training you would expect at any school, it was survival, any lesson could be your last and at this point Xeyn had become used to seeing comrades and enemies alike fall, he learned quickly, almost as if it was second nature. He struck with a particular group of people.

Xeyn had come to respect all of them, especially Xilleth’syn, for her skills as a warrior and leader. Saun’or had become somewhat of a rival to Xeyn, they would fight each other and hone their skills, both to beat the other in all aspects, sometimes it became almost petty. But it soon became a hound sniffing his nose after improvements, he wanted to train his body, he wanted to make it into a fortress that could withstand any and all attacks. That became his sole purpose. But it alll began with training, as a noble child he attended the Melee Magthere.

From left to right: Sorcere, Arach-Tinilith and Melee Magthere.
The Melee Magthere consisted of male students and masters, it was an all male school. It was mostly a school for nobles, but if talents were discovered they could enlist without being a noble but they could never become full masters, only lesser ones. Their education usually began at 10 years old and continued on for another 10 more years. Graduates of the Melee Magthere did not hold as high a prestige as those who graduated from Sorcere(Wizard school) or Arach-Tinilith(Cleric school), but still held a greater distinction than those who were normal citizenry.
The students of Melee Magthere spent their first fifty days listening to tales that were mostly lies regarding how the elves of the surface world mistreated the drow, then about nine years in combat tactics, followed by a year of rounding out their education by spending the first six months at Sorcere and the last six months at Arach-Tinilith.

After the first part of propaganda he learned that his sister Kiyata was going to begin her training in the melee magthere, what? A Jalil and in this all male school? No doubt it was a play by the other sisters of the family, to humiliate her or get her killed. Xeyn decided to watch her back from then on, mostly without her knowing. And he killed some that would plan against her on more than a few occasions. He also learned later that a group was conspiring to have him killed or removed from the school, but found that they had been killed, yet he did not know by who. He found that the mastermind behind it was no other then the little brother of Saun’or, namely, Soot’in Xorlarrin. huh.. he smirked, good for the third son.

More and more years of the combat training went by, and Xeyn and his sister Kiyata got used to having each others back, to begin with it was a notion of survival, there was no other reason. But it grew into something more, they trusted each other completely and that was shown in their fighting style, which both complimented each other. He favored the sword and shield, while she wielded huge weapons like halberds, he could keep the foe at bay, while she could strike at them with her reach.

Doing the combat training tournaments would be held each year so the could cut out the weak, and the strong could ascend in ranks, this tournament was named the Grand Melee.

The Grand Melee

The tournament was now, and Xeyn was to fight someone he had fought many times, namely Saun’or, noble as he, and son of Kiriy Xorlarrin. Saun’or was someone he has been in a stalemate since the first time they fought, he wanted to beat him, and he could feel Saun’or felt the same way, the Grand Melee was a perfect opportunity to show all who was the better warrior. They now stood in the arena, they could pick whatever weapon they prefered, Saun’or immediately picked two scimitars, a respected fighting style in the drow community, it had elegance in its way of killing. But Xeyn knew he had him that moment, of all the time Xeyn had been there, no one had picked up a shield to fight, but a shield and sword would be the perfect counter against his foe. He could block and parry both of Saun’or’s weapons, but What were Saun’or to do, he could not parry a shield bashing against him. Two swords… it had grace and could confuse the opponent with feints and the foe had to keep an eye on both weapons simultaneously. If he could do that and use the shield to bring Saun’or off balance, he could win!

(Combat music for the fight :D )
They were both gazing each other up, feeling the grasp on their weapons and getting their footwork on point, but their gaze never left each other, it was like their surroundings disappeared… One step, two steps, they walked towards each other cautiously, both knowing that one mistakes could mean defeat, then they stopped…

There was a moment of complete silence before...

Xeyn began walking fast now, then running, Saun’or stood his ground, he did not need momentum, but instead to feint his foe, Xeyn needed that momentum on his first swing, and that he got, a sound wissh! and a clank as his sword connected with Saun’ors. Now it was his shields turn, he pushed it forward with all his might, and Saun’or tried to stop it but to no avail, he was completely brought off balance, or so it seemed. Xeyn went in for the kill, but Saun’or had used the shield to hide his second weapon out of sight from Xeyn, it pierced Xeyn’s arm and they both stepped back, once again sizing each other up, while the crowd was dead silent.

This was bad, Xeyn had lost some use of his shield arm and could not effectively defend with it, Saun’or did not give him time to think however, and charged at him with his two swords! Which was he going to attack with, which! Xeyn held only one sword in hand and a shield he could barely keep up. While the adrenaline was pumping, he could feel no pain and he was still in focus, he could only see one way.

Time almost stopped in this moment, Saun’or had prepared both weapons to swing at Xeyn’s neck, that was clear to see, and so Xeyn threw his shield at him and ducked down aiming for Saun’ors legs as he was hidden behind the shield, his sword was almost there and the slash of flesh could be heard followed by Saun’or roaring in pain! Xeyn quickly rotated around so he could still carry some of the momentum in his last swing, but a bell rung and the fight was called. Why! Xeyn roared up at the bell ringer as a master stepped into the arena. This fight is over and you will both live this cycle! The master roared at the two. A priestess has requested that you two act as her bodyguards on a mission, and we do not refuse a priestess do we? The two combatants glanced at each other and while Xeyn still felt anger and disappointment for being bereft of the kill, he smirked and so did Saun’or. But then something hit him… No… They’re getting him and Kiyata separated!

Xilleth'syn
Xilleth’syn was the priestess they were to be assigned to, the same one they had allied with throughout their years in the Melee Magthere. One of the teachers of the Sorcere had run away with a powerful wand of create greater undead, they were to catch the fugitive and bring him back alive.
Another wizard at the school, known as Sorn’thrax were joining them, since he was a wizard focused on the school of divination, he could divine the location of the fugitive and the artefact. It did not take long for the group to track him down, they found the criminal and quickly stood up from a sitting position. He had hidden in a small cave pushing out from the cavern wall. No more than a goblin in hiding, but he had a dangerous weapon, and he was a teacher of the Sorcere. He was grinning as he looked towards the group of four, and as he did, several pale skinned humanoids began appearing from mist around them. The teacher was clearly not planning to negotiate and he quickly ordered these creatures to attack!

The battle was brutal, with the vampires wailing on the group, Saun’or immediately Destroyed one of the vampires with his two blades, his Draa Velve(two swords fighting style of the drow) Made quick work of it. Xeyn kept two others at bay from reaching Sorn’thrax while he bombarded them with spells. They quickly turned to mist and then nothing. Left was the wizard looking at them in disbelief, Sorn’thrax quickly took the opportunity to cast a hold person spell on him, which worked like a charm. After the mission was complete, Xeyn returned home to begin his training with the weaponmaster along with his sister, Kiyata.

Back home
Under the weaponmaster Urgan Dyrr, he was trained in the art of Kyorlin Plynn. Conservative dark elf fighters and those who either need to capture opponents alive (usually for interrogation) or just enjoy humiliating their opponents use the kyorlin plynn style, which means "watch and take." The style uses defensive tactics and efficient methods of disarming to delay opponents and negate their ability to fight effectively. Many drow fighting groups have at least one kyorlin plynn practitioner on hand to deal with the most powerful member of an enemy team; that drow keeps the tough opponent busy until his allies have dealt with the rest of the enemy forces and can then team up to defeat the difficult opponent. Many priestesses of Lolth learn this style because they like taking captives for torture and sacrifice.

Mind reading with psionic power was the trait that a lot of the high standing drow priestesses possessed. One they did not mind using, because what better way to get truthful information than the raw knowledge in the brain of their victims. Xeyn had become adept at keeping his thoughts hidden, or even displaying thoughts that could mislead, not because he was a good beguiler, but more so because they would trust those thoughts easily. Distrusting it would be to admit they could not breach the mental defense of one little male. However it did not take long before the thoughts they had collected from him were shown as false, this angered those that had tried, and he was sent away to Rhazzt’s Dilemma, a small outpost located between Gracklstugh and Menzoberranzan, it was about 30 miles south of his home.
Image
His long life of a soldier and later mercenary began on this outpost, he did not mind. It stepped nicely in line with what he was seeking. The life at the outpost was what one could expect in a military setting mixed with the destroying and ambitious nature of the drow. Not much different that the Melee Magthere, just older adversaries and better weapons, not to mention the occasional attack on the outpost, hard to say what's most dangerous.

At one point after a mission outside the outpost, where half the males had died and two others were injured, Xeyn returned with Xilleth’syn and the two injured males, one over his shoulder, the other leaning on the other. It’s odd, Xilleth’syn ordered them to retreat after the mission, there was no order to carry the weak, yet Xeyn did so brazenly. He felt they were his soldiers, it was some sort of comradery, one he had experienced in the melee magthere, but more secluded. Here it was all the troops.

When he got back he met his sister, Kiyata on the way to the corpse tent, as they so eloquently called it. He was glad to see her, like a strong pillar he knew would support the encampment, and someone he could trust to watch his back, perhaps the only one. Their exhange was brief at the time, Xeyn was adamant on getting the injured ones to the tent so he could get on with his next line of duty.

Xeyn and Kiyata, their early years in the encampment.

On one cycle the encampment was attacked by a gigantic umberhulk, Nathyrra had ordered the strongest of the male soldiers to advance on it, while the others would let loose their bolts at a safer distance. Kiyata was to lead this defense going onwards, she however had the order to stay with the soldiers in the back, and not join the melee breach.

The battle was fierce, and already before the first blow on the giant, had the first three veterans in the front had fallen to its psionic powers, they suddenly stopped and turned around to raise their weapons against their former allies. Xeyn and four others stood ready and still in control of themselves, Kiyata Gave the order for four of the soldiers to deal with the turned ones, while Xeyn kept the giant at bay. Xeyn liked this, a chance to test his mettle, and Kiyata knew this. Xeyn didn’t charge, he had to be cautious here, he had to make sure he was the center of attention for this hulking beast. The baleful and intelligible gaze of this creature met his, and he knew then, this beast could understand him. Whats wrong you giant piece of filth… come fight me, or are you afraid? The giant chittered with its mandibles and slammed its massive gorilla like fists on the ground, the tremors felt were palpable and Xeyn had a hard time keeping his stance as he grinned. Is barking all you do? c’mon you coward, fight me! Xeyn had a way of getting under others skin in the middle of combat, when you taunt them, and when you intimidate them. Xeyn began walking slowly to the side as he kept his sword and shield ready. All the while the umberhulk continued slamming its carapace fists to the ground in an unreadable rhythm of slams, then it finally charged at Xeyn, The sonic boom of the coalition was felt by the guards fighting each other, and Xeyn was pushed back five meters before stopping the beast, he felt several bones crack under the weight, and blood begin to fill his mouth, a pause of voice for the air to leave his mouth as he exhaled and grinned. That all you got you pathetic little runt? A pair of its multifaceted eyes looked down at him as the mandibles closed in on his form. He didn’t hesitate and pierced the two eyes one by one in two swift thrusts, the beast squealed in pain and lost its grip. This only gave Xeyn time to advance, and so he did, aiming for the mandibles this time, cutting them off with ease. Xeyn acted too hastily however, as the beast retaliated and ripped off his legs in one fell swoop!

Xeyn yelled out in pain as he hit the ground, blood beginning to fill the area slowly around his legs, he looked up at the beast that couldn’t see, it swung violently around itself in a struggle of survival. He began crawling to a straight side of the cavern wall while the beast was occupied. Xeyn could not help but laugh… I’m over here you piece of filth! The beast turned at the voice and began charging, Xeyn looked at it and then at the sword he had held up with the backside against the cavern wall, the beast came closer and closer, and just as it was about to hit him, he heard its carapace getting destroyed from the side, its head stopped just in front of him, as it was about to turn and meet this new threat, Where the hell do you think you’re looking!? With a push off the wall he pierced the beast right through its brain, it let out a few screeches of pain and shakes before it fell dead to the ground before him. Not a bit after his sister, Kiyata stood kneeled down beside him, helping him up.

The next cycles he spent in the tent of corpses, lying there and getting looked after personally by Xilleth’syn, he hated it, being helpless and useless, he’d be better off dead…

Kiyata came in to check on him, The distressed and sad look that Kiyata gave him only served to anger him. “Don't you give me that pathetic look, you don't need me anymore! Just discard me! I’M USELESS TO YOU NOW!.. Xeyn throws a plate violently to the side, it shatters, and he lowers his head and leans on his hand. Please… just let me die...” Kiyata looked at him for a moment, silence filled the tent besides the occasional cough of other bed layers. Fine… I’ll leave you behind… So you can catch up.

Later the same cycle a new face came along and offered to help Xeyn, she said that she could get rid of the pain, Xeyn refused. I don't care about the pain. She kept insisting and Xeyn eventually lost his temper. Listen you deaf doorknob, i don't want your damn medicine! Get out of here! As he swung violently at her. She quickly called for the guards to constrain him, telling them he was getting violent, and while they followed this order Xeyn noticed something behind the guards as they attempted to keep him down. she was about to inject the medicine into him. He grabbed her hand and forced the injection spike into one of the guards eye, surely enough, poison began to spread from his eye socket, it knocked the soldier out dead immediately. He let himself fall on the other and choked him to death, his arms still worked fine. After the guards layed dead on the floor he glanced up towards his attempted murderer, his eyes wide with anger, she looked like she wanted to scream for more help, but she couldn't frozen in fear. Combat was clearly not her forte. He took this chance to grab the sword of the dead guard below him. He crawled over with his one free hand, and struck at her legs, she fell. Slowly he crawled over her and finished the deed.

Xilleth’syn walked into a bloodbath as Xeyn lay on the floor. Xeyn got accused of murder and Xilleth’syn was the one ordered to punish him.

As Xeyn was punished by Xilleth’syn, she got the order to kill him if he hadn't revealed his mind to her psionic powers after the torture.

Xeyn refused to reveal what had happened and after a long session of torture with him hanging legless by binding chains he finally decided to bite his tongue to death, but then he heard a voice. So you can catch up... It echoed in his mind, and Xilleth’syn struck again with the whip of snakes, and they latched onto his right arm, second lashes over his right eye, that completely destroyed it and left the scar he has now, last one bit his neck, and he could feel some liquid entering him. He continued hearing his sister's voice then everything went black, complete silence. Then he could sense something, a smell, like as if he was at the blacksmith, close to the furnace, the steam rising. He opened his eyes and looked at Xilleth’syn, her eyes were wide, then he looked down, on his own half destroyed leggs. He looked at them as they came back, roaring steam rising from them, it hurt like nothing he had tried before, the pain was worse than the torture. His teeth clenched and he groaned loudly and beastly, the pain fueling a new anger in him, and as the legs had completely healed, he violently destroyed the chains in one movement. He landed on the ground with a small thuump!, and the dust separated from the spot he was on.

He walked slowly over to Xilleth’syn, there was complete silence ignoring the sound of his naked footsteps. One step at a time he slowly walked past Xilleth’syn, not saying a word. Her eyes followed him and she asked. Why are you not killing me? Without looking back. Why? You gave me this gift, Lolth gave me this gift, i will not disappoint you. She then used her psionic abilities and attempted to read his thoughts once more, this time nothing stopped her, and she learned what had happened.

Xeyn had later heard from Xilleth’syn that Kiyata was sent out on a mission, no doubt to get rid of her while they killed him. He just left that cycle after getting his armour donned, and Xilleth’syn followed him, The soldiers were in shock when they saw him, no doubt because he should have been dead, not only that, the veterans were all dead, all but him.

After a long search Xeyn and Xilleth’syn finally found Kiyata.

On the way back after having gotten reunited with his sister, they were all attacked by soldiers recognisable from their armour, they were from the encampment, they even had a wizard with them, Xeyn chuckled. They must be fearing him at this point, they wanted to make sure he was dead, and now they had to kill his sister and Xilleth’syn aswell.
The battle was swift for Xeyn, and well planned, no doubt the soldiers and the wizard were trained for this battle a long time, the wizard touched Xeyn as he was busy keeping three soldiers at bay. And after a quick incantation everything suddenly went dark and just as quickly he could see another cavern, it was unfamiliar. He looked around and could only find the wizard, who quickly prepared his next spell, however, he was too slow, as Xeyn quickly pierced his throat, stopping any incantation that was leaving his mouth, fizzling the spell.

After the short battle Xeyn felt no satisfaction for surviving, his mind was filled with doubt and anger. He thought of all the people he could have slighted, all those what could have something to do with this betrayal. The only one that he thought could have such command over the forces here, would be his other sister Esvena Dyrr. He growled in anger taking out his fustration on the ground and so his brooch that had the insignia of the house fell. He looked at it with a moments contemplation while his rage slowly returned, and with one ferocious slam the brooch was in pieces, pieces he pocketed back under his Piwawfi. The house never meant much to him, but Kiyata does, and She did. He got up and began walking the unknown caverns.

He eventually found his way back to the battle, but not before it was over, his sister was gone, and Xilleth’syn laid dead on the ground, seems the other soldiers had escaped, their corpses were not here, but atleast his sister got away. Xeyn walked closer only to discover that Xilleth’syn was still alive. He kneeled down, seems her throat had been pierced, and she could not heal it completely without being able to speak, she gurgled as she looked at Xeyn, desperation in her eyes as she grabbed his arm with what strength she had left. Xeyn simply nodded, Nothing needed to be said, and just like that, he put her out of her misery, not showing much emotion he began following the blooded footsteps of the guards, a new duty to fulfill
