Game now crashes on startup

Bit of a mystery here. I was IG earlier today on my desktop, then allowed Win10 to install some updates while I was on the phone to my OH.
After the updates, I'm getting the "Cannot Find Any Compatible Direct3D Devices" error - last time this was fixed by updating my graphics driver but this time that hasn't solved it.
Most of the Google advice I've found is "upgrade your graphics card" which seems a bit extreme for a nearly 10-year old game. Does anyone have any experience of this?

Try re-installing this directX runtime.
https://download.microsoft.com/download ... redist.exe
(If that doesn't help, you could try an older graphic card driver.)

Reinstalling DirectX seems to allow the game to load, but I'm stuck at 1024x768 resolution and UGH.
Rolling back the graphics driver puts me back in No Compatible Direct3D Devices error-mode.

Only the game resolution or windows resolution ?
Rolling back the graphics driver ...
Install DirectX again (it is often good to redo this after a graphic driver change)

I'm out of ideas! Nothing seems to have worked, including uninstalling & reinstalling the game, all my graphics card drivers, installing DirectX 9 separately and patching it manually. I'm stuck here

Ok, back to the basics.
What graphic card do you have?
What, if any, error messages do you get?
Usually a complete uninstall of all the graphic card drivers - reboot - reinstall card drivers + directx runtime should solve the issues, if it is software related. Doesn't help if it's faulty hardware.
To do a complete uninstall use
