Bloodspear of Gruumsh

Unread post by aaron22 »

i have been doing some research in orc pantheon and lore. since cleric is the favored class for orc, i looked into developing a special spell for clerics devoted to gruumsh. i built it off the backs of things we already have in game. not sure that helps or hurts..

feedback desired.

Bloodspear of Gruumsh
Spell level: Innate level 9, Cleric 9
School: Conjuration/Enchantment
Components V,S
Range: Long
Target/Area: Huge
Duration: Instantaneous + 6sec/cLeve(paralyze)l+6sec/2cLevels(fog of war)
Save: Reflex 1/2/Will/Fortitude(special)
Spell Resistance: No

Description
The cleric of Gruumsh can conjure forth from the heavens a representation of the spiritual weapon of Gruumsh, The Bloodspear. This spear plunges into the ground causing devastation and shattering the earth. Upon impact the spear knocks down and causes 1d6 points of bludgeoning damage per caster level in the area (to a maximum of 10d6) to all that do not follow an orcish god. A successful reflex save reduces damage to 1/2 and avoids the Knockdown effect. The spear also taints the area it is thrust into creating the fabled fog of war. This noxious fog settles over the area and it's effects vary according to the hit dice of the affected creatures. Victims inside the spell's area suffer the effects each round. Undead creatures are immune to this effect. In addition to this, any creature that received damage from the quake is immobilized for the duration of the spell. The target makes a will saving throw each round and upon a successful result is freed of the condition.

Fog of War
  • 1-3 HD: Instant Death
  • 4-6 HD: Fortitude save or death; 1d4 points of constitution damage if save is successful
  • Over 6 HD: 1d4 points of constitution damage
Followers of orc gods are treated as having 3 more HD than actual and if over 6 HD, are immune to the effects.

its terrible?
too powerful?
it looks worse than it really is if you actually play it out in your head. its just an 8th level spell with a 5th level spell. the 7th level spell will be harder to land than just if you casted the spell alone. if you save either reflex(most high reflex classes have evasion) or will you do not take any effect. if you are low at both of those saves then you most likely are used to dying.
