HiPs while talking

Saying a none emote (anything without *text*) should incur a -100 move silent penalty on the you for 2d2 seconds. This is because your character straight up -spoke- (a loud action), and should be revealed for a split second to everyone around them.

Saying something in whisper chat while sneaking successfully should invoke a +30 listen bonus for anyone within "touch distance" of you for 2 second. Whispering is slightly less overt, and only the people near you should be able to hear you when you murmur things. This could also be covered by a -30 move silent for 2d2 seconds, but one that somehow would only apply for people near you. Or perhaps have people near you automatically detect you?

This wouldn't effect emotes, just characters "speaking" to one another, or to a crowd. You shouldn't be able to talk or shout perfectly fine while sneaking around people, it makes very little sense. If you could make such loud noises with no penalty, why can't you walk without a penalty (aka you need to roll move silent to MOVE silently).

Lol, that's probably not a bad idea. My character in game was trying to puzzle it out and settled upon the idea that perhaps the antagonist (in the literary sense, not a slight on anybody) wasn't fully on our plane of existence. could also be using spells to throw his voice I suppose.

Anyway, it's worthy of discussion.

Well, mundane hiding (or even hips) doesn't put you on another plane of existence. It just helps to obscure you from view in a better fashion. If it did put you on another plane, you wouldn't be able to interact (hear, etc.) them anyway.

That kind of problem is why I decided to make this suggestion :3

I like it.
You want people to RP better? You add mechanics to support it.
You want to speak? Then you're no longer Silent.

I like this aswel and would even trow in a needed move silent check on people with a invisibility spell up.

While the listen checks for invisible people are possible to do and sensible I'm not overly keen on this as there are several shortcomings :

1. It will have to be done through a moving AoE, which is not the most reliable thing.
2. The succesful listeners will only get a text feedback, the invisible person will not appear black as when you detect someone through listen. You won't even know exactly where they are and you'll have no way to target them.
3. Monsters don't react upon text feedback ! And I don't really want to imagine the work needed to script a sensible reaction for every monster that hears you but doesn't see you.

Of course the player to player interaction would still be more sensible.

I thought monsters already sort of got listen checks :o they often enough follow me around whilst invisible anyway.

They have nothing special, their listen check is the same as the player's one, it is for detecting sneaks.

If a random monster runs after you when invisible you stop and let them catch up. Then they'll stop and roam, their list of creatures won't be updated until then (well unless something else happens like another player, summon, etc is perceived by said monster).

People use different RP styles to emote and talk. This would never work.

I concur with this. Is this something the Devs can change or is this a hard-coded game mechanic?

For now, it seems like it is more of a "backburner" idea, something for us to explore later. That said, I think this would be covered under god-modding. So for now, if this is seen, I'd say its best to report it as such. If enough reports come in (proving its wide-spread), then I'm sure something will be done to specifically address it.

As of now, its a relatively rare issue. Thankfully!

Disagree on the whisper point. I can walk up to anyone I want and speak something in their ear so quietly nobody but the target will even know I said anything, and I don't practice stealth as a profession. As for open talk? Yeah, you should be required to re-hide if you do that.

Actually, scripting wise, it wouldn't be that big of a deal to capture the major "emote" symbols people use. I still don't agree with this concept whole-cloth, though.

Speaking (not whispering) in stealth, should just flat out break stealth. :P

Whispering should give -10/15 to MS in a 3-5m radius, and speaking out loud should knock them out of stealth, 6 second cooldown and all.
