Need help understanding kits (Mechanics & RP)

I have been toying with the idea of adding the Solar Channeler kit to my character Taron who is currently a Cleric/Fighter/Bodyguard/Silverstar, but I have mechanical and RP concerns about it.
First, I couldn't find a clear explanation on how the kits work searching on the forums. They are discussed in a number of posts, but I couldn't see a definitive thread on the mechanic. On the wiki it describes them like classes, but I don't understand how the abilities for the class replace the original abilities. I am specifically interested in understanding the Solar Channeler, but I'd like to get a better understanding of the kit mechanic in general.
It seems like you start a conversation to enable putting xp towards it, so does that exp then not count towards regular leveling? And how does the level replacement work? I assume that I could progress no farther in Solar Channeler that I have in the cleric base class (Level 9). Would a cleric lose his domains? Could someone give some specifics on how the kits work or point me to where I can get more information?
Additionally, would it make sense for a Moon worshipper to take the kit? Taron qualifies mechanically, but is there a selunite equivalent? Maybe IC'ly it would be Lunar channeler? Or be considered some variant to Silverstar (which also requires the True Believer feat). Perhaps instead of a Solar, one of Selûne's Shards could be the entity that appears during the Ritual of Feathers? Once I get a better idea of the mechanics, I may to discuss this with the DM team, perhaps in PMs, to see if this is viable from an RP perspective and how we might proceed.
