New Blade Runner hype!

Anyone else hyped about the new Blade Runner sequel coming out this Friday? I'm off work, so I'm definitely going to go see it, personally. Ryan Gosling, Jared Leto, Harrison Ford, Robin Wright, Lennie James AND Dave Batista lol. I'm sold on the cast alone, but the universe of blade runner is a really cool one all on its own.

Yeah, I'm all over this Bladerunner 2049.

Have you watched the 3 pre-film Shorts produced and available on YouTube?

This time, however, with an update to one of my favorite cultural works from my youth, I'm going in thinking it will suck eggs. After Star Wars and Alien fails, I'm pessimistic for sure. :|

YourMoveHolyMan told me that if I didn't go see this with him, then he has legitimate grounds for divorce! :D

He's super hype about the story. I'm super hype about the male eye candy. Rawr!

I saw the original in the theater when I was still in high school. From the previews, I've felt there's something about this new 2049 version that lacks the grim, visual grit of the original.

But critics sure seem to like it, for example: http://www.npr.org/2017/09/29/554271617 ... e-original

So I'll reserve judgement and hope like hell I don't have to tell my wife "I told you so."

I rather enjoyed the original, so I have high expectations for this one; but I can't remember the last time I went to a bona fide movie theater to see a freshly-produced film. :? Maybe I'll catch it on Netflix in a year or two?

Just watched it. And can't help being disappointed. In my view, the film does contain a few good ideas (mostly visual), but also many clichés and unnecessarily drawn out scenes where the camera lingers moodily that didn't really earn their screen time. It also has an unmistakable 'let's-establish-a-franchise-we-can-milk-to-death-via-several-high-budget-spectacles' feel. And then there are such things as the mismatch of hyper-sophisticated technology and ridiculously crude philosophy (e.g. the you get a 'soul' from 'being born' point) or the simple-minded persuasion methods of the supposedly intelligent Wallace, all of which strained my credulity quite a bit... I went with someone who didn't know Blade Runner (from a non-Western culture) and they almost fell asleep towards the end. Ah well, I am sure it still beats the moronic super hero flick whose trailer I had to sit through first.

HM loved it.

I almost got up and left halfway through. (I think HM anticipated this, because he drove and thus had the car key.)

I don't think I was high enough to "get" that film. Like, I understood the plot, but the way the film went about unraveling it was in the most ridiculous ways. I tried my best to follow along, but right about the part when Ryan Gosling goes to find Harrison Ford (and the bees... what in the actual damn...) is when I checked out of the movie.

I utterly hated it, and HM's on his own for the next film. :P

Yeah, the movie did not meet expectations. And I even waaaaaaaay lowered them!

The original Bladerunner is a film based on a book that questioned what it meant to be Human, what defined Humanness.

Bladerunner 2049 is a film based on a film that diverted from this original question to question: what does it mean to be a Replicant? Who gives a crap about Replicants! And that, my friends, is where you manage to screw up a story: wrap it around Characters that simply do not develop nor are anything we actual Humans can relate to.

If if you really want to get into it, the mystery that lingered and thus created endless hours of great debate when discussing the original Bladerunner, was whether or not Deckard was a Replicant. It was the big hook, for lack of better words. With Bladerunner 2049, all the great mysteries are explained—some incredibly poorly—and very few new ones remain.

As in: Bladerunner 2049, a film you really won't think about again, one day after seeing it.

Lol, except I was thinking about it today, when I remembered this thread! ;)

Looks like I'm in the minority here. When I left the theatre I felt rather ambivalent about it, but the more I thought about it the more I liked it.
I'm not surprised it's dying at the box-office though; it's not really made in a modern style.

Yeah, I'm not surprised either other than the fact that it had such a star-studded cast. That alone was almost enough to make the movie for me.

But hey, time for a new thread!
