Discouraging Rest Outdoors

Just got an idea of how to discourage resting outdoors.

What if, resting outside gives you a disease debuff? That should discourage resting on a dirty road. I mean realistically, you are most likely to get sick resting outside. Thoughts?

Or hit by a passing caravan.

Yeah I totally got sick resting outside....Camping.....Sleeping in crap in Iraq. (LITERALLY. We set up in the center of a town in the middle of the night could not see crap...LOL and we got in our hasty positions for the evening. Each took their turns on watch and then when mine was over I went to sleep...woke up in the latrine area of the city all of us did)

On a more important note why do you want to discourage it at all? What perceived issue are you seeing that warrants to discourage people camping in the world?

Well, inns are pretty much useless in this game. So this might at least make it slightly more popular.

FAI Campfire *cough cough*

A real chance to get surprised by a beasty just might force people to at least acknowledge that lying around makes you vulnerable

...........So you want to break up this area for what reason? Why stop them from being at the fire? Is it really so offensive to you that you need a mechanic to stop them?! Maybe they are secretly hatching plans to usurp the world as we know it! :o *GASP*

Seriously though why do you think the inns are useless? I have had plenty of RP within F.A.I. and many other Inns across the server plenty of times. Also at the F.A.I. campfire and many other campfires around the server as well. It varies from time to time of course. From seeing two hins in a boxing match at the FAI. To BEntley's rooftop parties. Murders at the Naskel inn. A oft meeting adventure group at the Elfsong. There are plenty of times I have found RP in and around the Inn's. So I am not really seeing your point to this. I would have to say this makes little sense in RP or even RL. I don't wake up with some weird disease just because I slept on a dusty road area.

the server has a rest timer, no rest areas, spawns interrupting rest, and mobs that mord/take away wards. i feel we already have enough mechanics in regards to resting

it sounds as if you want to promote inns. that can be done without causing a negative to camping outdoors. simply make resting in an inn give a small buff, like food does

Inns are pretty much just for RP. Okay I get your point. But my point I'm trying to make is that isn't Inns exist as a place to stay/rest? I mean, sure I get the point you can "camp" outside. But resting on a dirty road, like I pointed out earlier, will make you succumb more to diseases.

Flip side, if you don't want to have this "disease" thing, how about giving some extra buffs if you sleep indoors? My main goal really is just to promote sleeping in inns (which is the main reason they exist in real world and games really).

Some type of "well-rested" rested bonus would be nice.

yeah, not really.

I dunno, maybe a survival skill check for good rest or bad rest, but disease is silly.

I sleep outdoors often during the summer, and often on a trail. Never got a disease.
It is silly when people 'rest" on the roads, but sleep, like death and travel, cant make sense in this game, because it is a game.

A better approach would be to give a 24 hour buff to characters that rest at the Inn.

I've seen plenty of people RPing about staying in inns. I don't really think it's necessary to restrict resting to inside areas (nor realistic). Plus resting isn't equated to 8 hour sleep in game. While I think it may add some added difficulty to restrict resting in certain maps (say all of cloakwood) having to run all the way into FAI instead of just sitting at the fire where it's relatively safe (and usually a fair degree of people) isn't necessary or beneficial. Given the bump in difficulty to spawns, I am not sure how well additional PvE difficulty will be recieved.

Plus there are plenty of classes where sleeping outside is preferential. Everyone basically plays some sort of adventure. The norm would be some experience sleeping outside given the lifestyle I would think.

Some issues with enforcing rest "indoors."

Namely

Druids
Rangers
Elves.

2 of that list hate inns. 1 of that list doesn't sleep.
