Would Geology fall under Lore: Nature?

Gotta figure this one out. Taking into account that geology is a Earth Science, which includes Atmosphere as a sub-group, and that Lore: Nature includes "...seasons and cycles, weather...", I'm thinking that geology would be fair to be within Lore: Nature oversight?

Geography doesn't work. Dungeoneering is an Knowledge related to action as much study of materials, but I would think Dungeoneering could come in as a close second option (but not my preference).

I did some Internet searching for D&D associations to this, but came up rather empty. Thoughts?

IMO, as a person that runs games, it would depend on what the purpose of the check was for.

If the character just wants to know about the mineral content, properties, and where the rock came from (e.g. *[Character] picks up a piece of Obsidian* "This rock looks weird..."), then Lore: Nature is what I'd call for.

If the check was about a hunk of stone found in a dungeon, then Dungeoneering would fit. [DM: "This stone is commonly used by Duergar for building."]

Geography might fit, in the above case [DM: "This rock is volcanic in nature. The closest volcanoes are X and Y. It probably came from one of them..."

If trying to determine what the rock can be used for, then I'd say Crafting, Lore: Arcana, etc. [DM: "This ore is infused with magical essense." or "This smooth, brittle stone is used by Orcs to make deadly arrow heads and spear points."]

That's just my take on it.

Thanks for the insight, DFM. I can were the aspects of working with geology/ore/magic can overlap some Skills. If your response would become the "way," than my own build supports the PC I am RPing (as in his knowledge). Cheers.

That's a fantastic way of explaining the circumstances of the checks! Very handy.
