Within the Friendly Arm's inner court, a singer swordmaiden is noted to be inquiring about mithral heavy shields. She appears highly interested in purchasing such a shield, and asks travelers as to their availability as well as how much such an item might sell for on the market.

[OOC: Okay, I'm looking to outfit my bardess with a mithral heavy shield to escape uber-annoying arcane spell failures. But do these come with any bonuses (+1 up to +4)? What's a reasonable asking price in gold? And is it even possible to find one on the server these days? If anyone can help answer these questions, it would certainly be appreciated.]

Spellchain, +2 Iron Chainmail (medium armor), with -20% arcane spell failure.

If you got Armored Caster feat, you can make use of any heavy shield you find.

it does, the one i have seen is without enhancement. plain heavy shield 0% ASF

usaully they are only -5%, so still 10% spell failure remaining.

OR

Just use an epic spellchain and use a heavy shield +4. The spellchain is medium armour, so can be used without penalty with the Battle Caster feat. It gives -20% ASF so you can use up to a heavy shield without penalty.

The Heavy Shield I've used for years with 0% asf, has no bonus +AC]

Heavy shields without ASF are grandfathered in as far as I can tell. You will need something fairly epic to trade for one and to be honest the +1 AC you get with it probably won't be worth it unless you really like the look.

I never said Spellchain was 0% ASF. If you have the Battlecaster feat you can then use medium armour without spell failure. The -20% applies to anything that can cause spell failure (such as a shield). A heavy shield incurs a 15% ASF, which should be reduced to 0% while wearing Spellchain. It's probably still not worth it however, as most people don't want normal chainmail instead going for evasion and mithral chainmail. Anyway, if you use your spellbook well, you can get by without a 0% ASF shield.

Also, the heavy shield +3 with 0% ASF and cold resistance does exist, I have one, but you're right - they're likely grandfathered.

I think I'm just going to stick with my 2Hander approach and avoid shield ASF altogether.

Bonus question: Do Forest Walkers, epic exist? Dodge 4 and bonus feat dodge basically...

Epic Forest Walkers exist but have Dodge AC+4, Dexterity+3, and a use of Freedom of Movement 1/day.
