PvP against an arcane caster
So im kind of curious since i always hear people say arcane casters are gods in PvP. What if i just buy a least spell mantle wand and spam that thing until the wizard is out of spells? What can he do to stop that?

Quickened Dispel Magic, Maximized IGMS before it's back up. Rinse, repeat.onetwothree wrote:So im kind of curious since i always hear people say arcane casters are gods in PvP. Wands act like quickened spells so i pretty much just spam quickened mantles. Theres no way you'll get that maximised IGMS out quicker than i can mantle back up.

could cast a summon to beat on you while you spammed your wand. and wiz quickened spells would be a problem. could also lay down a grease at your feet and you would not be able to use your wand laying on the ground.

Summons are so weak they dont pose any threat to a decently built lvl 30 char.
That grease is interesting though if going up against a low reflex build. Would the grease actually get rid of the mantles?

Re: PvP against an arcane caster
There are plenty of Spells that do not check SR. My favorite being Grease...and cue the LOLZ. But a set of Quickened then Maxinised Orbs, should get the dying started just as well (or finish them off while flailing in a grease puddle).Only spells which have spell resistance checks are absorbed, meaning helpful healing and protective spells do not get blocked, and any spells which do not require a spell resistance check do either.

I see so orbs would just ignore the mantles? That would definetly work then i guess.

Is that true? SR has nothing to do with Spell Mantles, or so I thought.
Apparently I need to learn to read.

also found this post by chad so i suppose you could cast a quickened whatever to strip the mantle followed by a quickened phantasmal killer for example if ure a DC magechad878262 wrote:Only way to cast more than 1 spell / round is with quickened spell. Scars, Spell like abilities and wands will have spells fire faster than casting the same spell would, but you are still limited to one per round.

Only spells that check for spell resistance can be blocked by spell mantles. Other spells just go through.
Now, one thing you could try to do is to inflict as much damage as possible, and disrupt the enemy spell caster before any spells get a chance to fly off. This pretty much means that you need to get right next to the caster before the PvP even begins.
But yeah, PvP rules have been made with arcanists in mind. But still, nothing prevents you from just walking right in fron of someone, and making a habbit of just gently tapping buttons for 'next target' and 'auto action.'
Wand of Silence cast at next to the Wizard's feet is another good idea. Since few of them have that Automatic Silent Spell feats, or even silent spells memorized.
Whirlwind Attack also hits them through their 'invisibility/etherealness' effects. Its attack range is very short though, so once again, you need to get right next to the caster.

Wands are not actually quickened, no. They are slower than quickened spells, but faster than normal spells.onetwothree wrote:Wands act like quickened spells so i pretty much just spam quickened mantles. Theres no way you'll get that maximised IGMS out quicker than i can mantle back up.
But yeah, you can probably spam mantles. On the other hand, the mage can choose to cast a spell that isn't subject to spell resistance (like an orb) and you're stood there spamming mantles.
Or the mage can just walk off, seeing as you're just wasting wand charges.

Mords is standard for any arcane duel... thats not an opinion its a fact. If you dont have mords hope you have greater spell breach otherwise you are screwed.

Re: PvP against an arcane caster
Other than using Orbs, its quite fun to throw a quickend or even better a maximized Cloudkill at their feet, watching their con go down to 0... Usually throws most people of as they are standing there spamming Lesser Spell Mantle wands hehe
But it depends alot on "what kind of caster" you meet as well. Some mages prefer using high Con with Elemental Shield and Death Sheild... Others do Hips... And some maximizes DC...

Do we think in pvp vs a caster that the difference between 17 base fort save and 19 base fort save matters? Said character will have max UMD, so scrolls that boost saves are in play. What stacks from gear?
Trying to determine if great fort is worth it.
