Epic Levels in Low CR Locations

Hello everyone.

I have noticed, that when an Epic Level character "passes through" some low-lvl locations, spawn gets overwhelmingly strong.
So, that dude is vanished, and I have to deal with Witch Doctors, who cast Inflict Wounds for ~20hp/cast and his Dire Wolf summon, who instantly damages me for 24. You know, its quite tough for low leveled character, thank Gods I am not a Wizard.
Perhaps, if your level is too high, it should not affect the spawns? Or it is just multiple coincidences about high level passing and spawning elite creatures, and your level has nothing to do with level of monsters?

No, you are correct. It is a new feature that was implemented a month or two ago. It adds variety for old players, but new characters can be hurt by it.

I started a new character and level 30's would run past me at the hilltop ruins entrance (for the loot). I'd just log out. No point in trying to fight a randomized boss mob several levels higher then my intended CR. It just killed me and drained all my healing kits when I tried. They should really level lock chests there.

Yeah, the variable spawns are a lot of fun for higher level characters, but starting a new character is probably harder now. Maybe level lock the chests in lowbie areas, or disable variable spawning in lowbie areas?

If the CR is set by the first person in the Zone, it should be common ettiquete for the highbies to let lowbies zone in first. That running by you experienced Laughingman is in poor taste indeed.

It increases by 2 HD. It's a bit more difficult, sure, but not that much.

It does some weird stuff with certain caster mobs, though (like the bugbears who have suddenly started going wildshape, and close-to-epic casters who then level up to 21 and thus automatically get vampiric feast).

This is why I check the Player Scry before going places. People should stop hiding their location when they are grinding. I can see hiding for intrigue RP, but if I see people in an area Questing/Adventuring for XP or Loot/Grinding I avoid the area if it is a lower CR area. Unless I need to go there for some reason. Then its as easy as a tell to let the people already there know.

I don't think so: I was in cave, and exactly after some white-haired woman with a spear ran in and thundered somewhere inside without a single word, I got a ridiculously large spawn of suspiciously strong goblins at me, and she clearly did not ever thought about helping me. Yeah, she is an epic, and I saw her doing that many times in several locations.
Gladly someone appeared and helped me out: clearly I had no chances alone.

This is not supposed to happen that way. If a lower level is in an area, it is -not- supposed to up the difficulty tier when a higher level strolls through.

If a higher level was in an area that a low-level now entered, then the spawns will start at that higher difficulty but the low level's presence will mean any new spawns will be at the lower tier as long as they are in the area. Upon completing transition the log does show a warning that stronger monsters are present in an area you've entered.

Perhaps something is broken with this and the various scripts are not recognising low level characters' presence as they ought?

Consequently, I'm moving this to bug reports.

It's designed to be controlled by the average level of the lowest level group in the area. If a lower level is already in an area, and a higher level comes in, it -shouldn't- change anything. If a higher level is already in there, and a lower level comes in, then the mobs already spawned will have scaled, but any mobs spawning after that will be dictated by the lower level.

So, someone running into where you are is not going to affect you at all. Someone running ahead of you into an area would, though.

It sounds like it is an issue with the "response" spawns (the ad hoc bosses and teams), rather than the scaling.

I actual like these (and yes they are uber dangerous especially alone), the rewards are worth the struggle.

I don't know the CR scaling of the bosses, but yes, they are much more dangerous than the mobs around. In the Sharpteeth Orcs, I used to have my gish go in there basically unwarded. Now I have to actually ward, because the boss spawns can hurt him if I don't.

But, boss spawn = more loot. So I like it.

The dynamic scaling is based on the average level of the party with the lowest level, so in that case probably your level. As distateful as the above was it should have had no consequences on monsters.

I wonder if the script is triggering the bosses based on the presence of the Epic PC, but scaled to the lower? If you're in an area that's your CR, but suddenly every other mob spawn is a boss because there's an epic in there, it's still within the low-level range, but now there's a lot more of them, I can see how that would get pretty hard pretty quick.

e.g. where there used to be maybe 1 boss triggered randomly, more are being spawned because of the Epic? That is, if I properly understand the logic of the script as described.
