What was the point of restricting the communication?

I already don't like this update. It started when I found the door to zhent caravan locked, and now my tiefling gets 0 exp at the surface and can't loot chests there, and I'll be straightforward - this sucks. I understand that it is because of surface grinders, but why tieflings, genasi and orcs are affected by this too? If the surfacers are guilty in this - restrict them, not underdarkers! Even without this update there were NO underdarkers grinding at the surface areas at all. Those grinders will still find the place to grind, but some people (me including) now have much less possibilities for RP. What was the point of this update? Is the server too overcrowded or are there constant no-stop dramatic rumbles between surfacers and UDers? What is the reason?

This may have been unintended. My understanding of the change was that only XP for kills and lootables were impacted. RP (and XP from RP) was never to be restricted. Not sure why the Zhent caravan door is locked now, but it's possible that it was not intended.
The idea was not to mechanically block travel either way, it was simply to stop people mechanically from doing something that has always been against server rules (grinding or looting).
Note that for Tieflings, Orcs, Genasi if you want to RP moving from one to the other the DMs have the ability to set your character from Underdark to Surface. Point is you can only be one or the other and should only be traveling between the two for RP, not for XP/Loot grinding (aside from Upperdark).

But there is absolutely no technical difference between surface and underground tieflings, why are they restricted? Underground tieflings/orcs can't do surface quests, wasn't this enough?

My understanding is it's a dm ruling and had been for... well a betty long time. Why do you need to loot and grind in both?

Not to loot and grind, but play with players on both sides. RP is not limited to tea drinking, fighting together is also a part of RP (unless we are talking about Xvarts death circles or such). And when my companion gets xp and loot and I don't it feels bad. I mean it means I have to pretend I am looting (which is stupid) or don't loot at all (which is more stupid for my treasure hunter pc). Tieflings and orcs can live in both societies but are treated with suspicion in both, so it is pretty fair. I treated this possibility as feature it is.

Based on the written rules exploring is still defined as grinding, not a reason to be on the other side. I agree tieflings, orcs and genasi should be allowed in both, but currently the rule doesn't differentiate by race, unless dms rule otherwise. Until that occurs the mechanics reflect the rules.
