Completely lost

Hello BGtSCC,
I am a relatively new player and today decided to try and look into the forum RP to further my character's development. All I can say is I am completely lost. A decade of forum posts is way too daunting to new player. I have no idea where to even start...

Easy, don't try to sift through 10 years of forum posts... Start with the most recent and start with the area's/regions where you'r character has spent the most time. If you are mostly in BG and FAI you don't really need to know rumors about Beregost, Nashkel or the Northern Sword Coast after all. Likewise, it's far more likely your PC would hear a passing rumor of something that occurred last week rather than last year or a decade ago. So start small, then if you hear about something in game you can always use the search function or maybe even ask the PC you RP with to PM you a link to a specific rumor.
Rather than trying to somehow gorge yourself on an immense amount of server history/lore, just try to pick at the edges a bit. Eventually if a certain topic or area interests you you'll find out more about it organically as you play.

I'd wager though that the Amn-Gate war and the Nemesis of the Gods key points might be well known.
- Amn got Beregost after a war that started about something regarding a bridge blowing up. (intentionally cutting corners here)
- Well into the war a literal army of dragons gathered around the Sword Coast and waged war amongst themselves. Some had metallic-like scales, others blood red, black and the like.
- BG got besieged by undead
- Soldiers fell asleep to feverous nightmares in their siege camps around Beregost, regardless of their faction
- The Hall of Wonders, and with it, a large section of the Palace District got leveled. The reason for this was a large flash of light and a giant five headed dragon rising from the flames and flying off north. Some say this was Tiamat, Queen of Chromatics, herself.
- At the very same time, the soldiers woke from their slumber.
... The amount of times you get called crazy saying you saw an army of dragons ICly is hilarious, considering the fact the whole region was swarming with them, and commoners saw goodly dragons defend them from the evil ones.

Hello niapet,
Subject: Time for that oft-asked question, once again!
It seems you are not alone.
Have fun and kind regards

Anyhow, there are players who you basically have to threaten with a knife before they share tales of their grand adventures. It is also part of the reason why some this stuff:

Is a bit hard to hear about in game. The players do not advertise their grand deeds, they do not hire bards to sing of their exploits... Etc.
Thus the best thing to do is be a foreigner, and pick that extra langauge from the correct backround trait. You just say you've heard strange tales. Of mad Red Wizards trying to take over the city and beaten to mercantile compliance for now. Disease and plague from mad arcanists. A tower full of mages who aspired to teach responsible use of the arcane art while not exactly doing what they preached themselves. Pirates turned into bridge camping bandits. An ugly man being turned into an ugly woman. People turned into chickens, into so many chickens! Not to mention the hordes of blood thirsty hooded elves and so many hordes of orcs underneath the banner of 'Black Orcs', and how a town was brought to ruin by a war fought between the Lord's Alliance and the forces of Zhentil Keep.
So much has happened over the years that being a foreigner is a good choice.
