Preparing spells without resting, if have empty slot.

Hullo!
So the D&D rules say the following:
Empty slots: Gained by resting 8 hours, whether elf or human or anything else. Must be 8 hours of relaxation and no strenuous mental activity.
Preparing spells: Maximum 1 hour, minimum 15 minutes. The more spells you can memorize and at higher spell levels (not the amount of empty slots you have left over, but the theoretical maximum), the faster you can prepare spells - allowing to prepare multiple simple ones in the 15 minute period!
Thus, a wizard should be able to prepare spells in the field, provided they have free spell slots. This would help reinforce the "toolbox" style play, as the wizard goes in with few spells prepared, bunkers up when need arises, prepares the needed spells in the 15 minutes and unleashes them.
Now, resting for 8 h is replaced by a cooldown + 5s rather than a continuous act.
The field-prep time could similarly be abstracted into an ability that has a casting period of 1-4 minutes. Original Sending took 5 minutes to cast, so long casting periods already have precedent.

We may not want to go this route. Anyone else remember 24+ hour rest times when a high level mage was in your party while playing the gold box games? This would also require a lot of gui scripting which frankly is a PITA w/ this engine. Lots of buck, little bang

Should never be more than 8h rest for spell slots, or 1h for spell prep.
If anything, DMs could do this for events.

i think they kinda do already. i havent been in a bunch of events, but typically the group doesnt get to rest. if they do a good 15/20 minutes is used to plan a safe and considerable camp. then the actual time of resting is sped through if uneventful. and this is good. if the event has a boat ride or something involved that too could be used to rest. other than that. no rest allowed.

The point is that a wizard could do the preparation without needing to rest. Impact-wise, 15-1h spent to prepare spells is much different than a full rest. A wizard can prepare spells while being moved too, so one could technically stay back the part and be carried around by the local barbarian to prepare spells for the problem at hand.

Can a DM peek at spell slots to know about empty spell slots and not just take a player's word? If so then it makes sense to consider at least.
Lawd knows I know so very little of 3.5 pnp. The two times i played was 5th ed. and iirc everything went the way of spontaneous casting. Still fun I'll play more of that in the future.

while that would be fine in a PnP world hoihe, it might not work so well in a video game. there is likely a work through that would enable you to pull this off. but you must consider that this is an open door to any number of possible exploits. none of which i know, because i have zero desire to do that. in addition, it also steps a bit on the sorc's already very small toes.
i dont have strong feelings on this as it would just be another tool for me to play with if it did go live. just being a bit of a devil's advocate.
