Beholder insta kill through immunity

Unread post by LiegeTai »

As title says, Fighting beholder, shadow shield up (Immunity to insta death) one round into fight rolled multiple saves to be insta killed before it even had an attack round. Please note the immunity to fear worked, however insta death managed to pass the immunity.

Reported to DM online, instructed to submit as bug, await a ruling as to the nature of this (bug or not) to decide if i have to take the hit on exp.

The beholder dispells you so there wont be any shadow shield.

Yes there was, the immunity to fear remained, ergo the spell was still active. (check the combat log on the failed will save Vs fear)

Sun Elf, Int Based Ftr/Wiz/Ek/Ascc. I have no inherent fear immunity (I already checked)

I cannot see how this beat the spell immunity, looking at the Log the spawn didn't even attack me, the save was made off of my attack? means it has an instant kill effect applied if you hit it.

Furthermore, the damage that triggered the insta kill was from Magic, not the usual negative of the necromancy kills.

I have checked with DM's and it should have no such feat, hence why i have posted here :)

The double save (Will then Fort) suggests its either Phantasmal Killer or Weird, given it also damaged you after you miss/hit the save earlier.

These are illusion spells, they bypass any death immunity.

Soz about the death, but I dont think it was a bug.

Again, I would agree.. had it actually cast anything, Look at the log.. the beholder does nothing, I hit it it forces 6 saves then insta death after 27 magical damage?

(I have 30 Spell Craft, if it had cast it would show in log, and i would have ID it...)

This is an "on hit effect" that has triggered, the beholder either has a "casts spell when hit" effect that spams multiple times, or its a bug.

Im not so worried about the Exp, I grinded out another 2k shortly after.

My point is that's an odd mechanic, one that defies explanation, and will catch a lot of others out if its an "on spawn" glitch, as seemingly there is no way to resist it.

The only other explanation i could offer is the spawn was DM possessed when I attacked it, and I was insta killed by DM magic, as punishment for striking most holy.....But I checked with santa and ive been a good boy.. so far : <:D so thats unlikely.

Xenofex does not cast Phantasmal (but, hint hint, he's very susceptible to it!).

I dare say you got dispelled from antimagic ray and then the 1 on the Fort save vs. Death Ray. Either that or death ray ignores Death Magic Immunity. Your fear immunity came from Greater Heroism probably.

Next time cast darkness, run in and bash his face. Works a treat.
