Ungrateful NPCs

Unread post by Hoihe »

Got caught by a pilgrim on the tradeway s of beregost. Accepted to help save her pilgrim friend from xvarts.

Tons of xvarts appear, I try diplomacy and fail so I wind up fighting. As it was a scenario with way too many xvarts, I dropped a Grease, Mind Fog and Cloud of bewilderment and, thinking ILMS doesn't hurt the NPC I'm trying to save, I cast it.

Kill all the xvarts, the NPC I am trying to rescue is a bit singed from the fighting but is still in mostly good health. NPC refuses to talk and attacks me.

I just HiPSed away to avoid having to kill him.

What was the purpose of Mind Fog? Grease is a Reflex Save and Cloud of Bewilderment is fortitude... Mind Fog doesn't really help either of those.

As to the ungrateful peasant, maybe he took exception to you causing his buddy to go blind? Or perhaps his buddy slipped in the grease spell and broke his ankle?

I believe this particular encounter is a "trick" played upon your Character IC...curtesy of dedude's odd sense of humor!

The NPC was likely caught in one of your AoEs.

Mind fog was a "In case Grease and Bewilderment aren't enough to prepare for a will AoE disable."

And the ungrateful peasant was alone! Sure he got a bit dazed, but he didn't get stabbed.

Yeah, he got right in middle of grease and the bewilderment. But I'm suspecting even if he got cuaght in my mass cure spells, he'd have turned hostile still. Would there be a way to prevent NPCs getting caught in spells not supposed to hurt friendlies?

I do have to note being swarmed by a ton of Xvarts was fun. Finally I had reason to use my spells and not feel like I'm wasting things.

Edit: What happens if one casts invisibility on the NPC? It'd technically make sense ICly as you prevent the hostage-takers from hurting the hostage, maybe even allow them to escape safely while the PC takes care of the ruffians.

I've the feeling tho' that the NPC would become hostile.

I tried following through on this quest, and just as I started to converse with the NPCs who "...look willing for a dialogue...," some of the lost family literally exploded, then I had to fight a bunch of xvarts, then with one NPC barely alive, it turned on my Toon, my Toon auto attacked, and the NPC family member was dead.

That's why I thought it was some sort of Xvart + polymorphing sorcerer's trap!
