Well what kind of name do you propose? Aurora McBorelialisface? Steve is a perfectly good name.

As a proud Canadian, I can tell you that one of the guys who named it "Steve" probably knows someone called Steve, and they all think that it is pretty funny. There may also have been alcohol involved...
