I found the Helm of Balduran in some random chest in the Wilds, can I roleplay that it is the real and only Helm of Balduran himself (not another random loot)?

There are many Helms of Balduran. Perhaps some are fake, perhaps some were worn by him at one point or another, perhaps some just resemble what Balduran once wore.

I think your character is free to insist that you have the Helm of Balduran himself. While others are free to doubt your claims.

After all; 'Balduran hid the rest of his fortune along with numerous relics in one of the many caves along the Sword Coast cliffs. These cliff's are known as the Sword's Teeth.'

I have one or two on a mule. Used it when my main had less useful equipment then he does now. Mine is the real one!

I'd say it's a fairly common item, I've got one on one of my low level alts- and I bought it from the one vendor there in Soubar.

So I'd say you're quite capable of having your character saying they've got the real deal, but it's likely no one is going to believe it, given they seem to be fairly well ubiquitous about the coast. (About like that $15 Times Square Rolex that anyone who's visited NYC really, really needs to get just because why the hell not?)

As for authenticity, I imagine it is a but like relics and holy items in the medieval ages. Put them together and you get a Jesus with seventeen fingers and enough wood to crucify five hundred people.

I bought my Helm of Balduran in Bali. The street vendor said it was the genuine one. Along with the other thirty she had on the table. Was able to haggle a package deal to couple the helmet with some genuine Oakley aviators.
Seemed legit.
10/10 would buy again.
